Introduction

The Norpro Deluxe Cherry Pitter Model 5121 is designed for efficient removal of pits from cherries, making them ready for canning, freezing, dehydrating, or baking. This device features an automatic feed tray and a high vacuum suction base for stability during use. It is constructed for ease of use, quick pitting, and simple cleaning.

Assembly Instructions

1. Prepare the Suction Base: Ensure the suction base is clean and dry. Place the pitter on a smooth, non-porous surface such as a countertop. Press down firmly on the pitter while flipping the lever on the suction base to secure it in place. This creates a high vacuum seal.
2. Install the Red Gasket: If not already installed, insert the red rubber gasket into the slot located just above the pit collection container. Ensure it is seated correctly.
3. Assemble the Plunger: Unscrew the black handle from the metal plunger rod. Feed the plunger rod up through the red gasket and the main body of the pitter. Ensure the flat side of the plunger aligns with the internal guide.
4. Attach the Spring and Handle: Place the spring onto the top end of the plunger rod. While holding the spring in place, screw the black handle onto the plunger rod until secure. The plunger should be in the high (retracted) position when not in use.
5. Attach Pit Collection Container: Slide the clear pit collection container onto the designated rails beneath the pitting mechanism.

Operating Instructions

1. Prepare Cherries: Wash and remove stems from cherries.
2. Load the Feed Tray: Place a handful of prepared cherries into the automatic feed tray. The cherries will roll into position one by one.
3. Position Collection Bowl: Place a bowl or container beneath the pitter's chute to collect the pitted cherries.
4. Pit Cherries: Press down firmly on the black handle of the plunger. The plunger will push the pit out of the cherry and into the collection container below. Release the plunger, allowing the pitted cherry to roll out into your collection bowl.
5. Repeat: Continue loading cherries into the tray and operating the plunger until all cherries are pitted. Periodically check and empty the pit collection container.

Maintain a steady rhythm for optimal performance. Ensure the plunger is fully retracted after each press to allow the next cherry to fall into place and the pitted cherry to exit the chute.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning ensures the longevity and hygienic operation of your cherry pitter. The unit is designed for easy disassembly to facilitate thorough cleaning.

1. Disassembly: Carefully disassemble the pitter by reversing the assembly steps. Remove the pit collection container, unscrew the handle, remove the spring and plunger, and detach the red gasket.
2. Washing: Hand washing is recommended for all components. Use warm, soapy water to clean all parts, paying close attention to areas where cherry juice or pulp may accumulate. Rinse thoroughly.
3. Drying: Allow all parts to air dry completely before reassembling or storing.
4. Storage: Store the clean, dry pitter in a safe place until its next use.

Note: Clean the pitter immediately after use to prevent cherry juice from drying and staining components.

Troubleshooting

• Cherries Sticking to Plunger: If cherries frequently stick to the plunger, ensure you are fully retracting the plunger after each press. A quick, full release helps dislodge the pitted cherry.
• Suction Base Not Holding: Ensure the countertop surface is clean, smooth, and dry. Press down firmly on the pitter while engaging the suction lever. If the surface is slightly textured, repositioning or applying more pressure may help.
• Ineffective Pitting: Verify that the red gasket is correctly installed and that cherries are properly aligned in the pitting mechanism. Overloading the feed tray can sometimes cause misalignment.
• Cherry Juice Splatter: Pitting cherries can cause some splatter. Consider placing the pitter in an area that is easy to clean or placing a protective barrier around the work area.
