2. Important Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before using this respirator. Failure to follow all instructions and warnings could result in serious injury or death.

  • This respirator is NIOSH approved for negative-pressure air purifying and positive-pressure dual airline applications.
  • Always use with approved 3M cartridges and filters appropriate for the specific hazards present.
  • Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen.
  • Do not use when concentrations of contaminants are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
  • Leave the contaminated area immediately if breathing becomes difficult, dizziness or other distress occurs, or if you smell or taste the contaminant.
  • Consult local regulations and safety guidelines for proper respirator selection and use.

3. Product Components

The 3M 6200 Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator consists of the following key components:

  • Facepiece Body: Soft, lightweight material designed for comfort and a secure fit.
  • Head Harness: Easy-to-adjust straps for a customized fit.
  • Filter/Cartridge Attachment Ports: Two ports on the sides for attaching 3M cartridges and filters.
  • Exhalation Valve: Central valve for expelling exhaled air.
  • Inhalation Valves: Located inside the filter ports.

4. Setup and Assembly

Before initial use, ensure all components are clean and undamaged. This respirator does not come with filters or cartridges; these must be purchased separately based on the specific hazards.

  1. Inspect Components: Check the facepiece, head straps, and valve areas for any signs of damage, cracks, tears, or deformation. Do not use if damaged.
  2. Attach Cartridges/Filters: Align the notch on the cartridge or filter with the alignment mark on the facepiece port. Push the cartridge/filter onto the port and twist clockwise a quarter turn until it stops. Ensure it is securely seated. Repeat for the other side.
  3. Verify Attachment: Gently pull on the attached cartridges/filters to confirm they are firmly in place.

5. Proper Fitting Instructions

A proper fit is critical for effective protection. Perform a user seal check every time you don the respirator.

  1. Position the Respirator: Place the respirator over your mouth and nose. Pull the head harness over your head.
  2. Adjust Straps: Position the top strap high on the crown of your head. Adjust the lower straps by pulling the ends to achieve a snug but comfortable fit around your neck. Ensure the facepiece is centered.
  3. Negative Pressure Seal Check: Close off the filter/cartridge openings with the palms of your hands. Inhale gently. The facepiece should collapse slightly against your face, and no air should leak in. If air leaks, readjust the straps and reposition the respirator.
  4. Positive Pressure Seal Check: Close off the exhalation valve cover with the palm of your hand. Exhale gently. The facepiece should bulge slightly, and no air should leak out. If air leaks, readjust the straps and reposition the respirator.
  5. Troubleshoot Leaks: If you cannot achieve a proper seal, consult the troubleshooting section or discontinue use. Facial hair, certain eyewear, or other conditions may prevent a proper seal.

6. Operation

Once properly fitted and sealed, the respirator is ready for use in contaminated environments. Always ensure you are using the correct cartridges/filters for the specific airborne hazards you will encounter.

  • Wear the respirator continuously while in the contaminated area.
  • Do not remove the respirator until you have exited the contaminated area.
  • If you detect any odor, taste, or irritation from the contaminant, or experience difficulty breathing, immediately leave the contaminated area and check your respirator for proper fit or replace cartridges/filters.

7. Maintenance, Cleaning, and Storage

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and effectiveness of your respirator.

  1. Disassembly: Remove cartridges/filters after each use.
  2. Cleaning: Wash the facepiece (excluding cartridges/filters) in warm water with a mild detergent. Use a soft brush to remove dirt. Rinse thoroughly in clean, warm water.
  3. Disinfection: Immerse the facepiece in a solution of one ounce of bleach per gallon of water for two minutes, or use a suitable disinfectant wipe. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
  4. Drying: Air dry the facepiece in a clean, non-contaminated area. Do not use heat to dry.
  5. Inspection: Before storage, inspect all parts for wear, damage, or deterioration. Replace any worn or damaged components.
  6. Storage: Store the clean, dry respirator and its components in a sealed bag or container away from contaminated areas, direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and damaging chemicals.
  7. Filter/Cartridge Replacement: Replace cartridges and filters according to manufacturer guidelines, local regulations, or when breakthrough occurs (e.g., smell, taste, irritation).
