User Manual

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Steinbach 040200 Speed Clean Comfort 50 Sand Filter System. This system is designed to provide efficient and reliable filtration for your pool or pond, ensuring clean and clear water. It features a self-priming pump with a pre-cleaner, an integrated timer, and a versatile 7-way valve for various operational modes. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure proper use and maintenance of your filter system.

2. Safety Instructions

WARNING: Always disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance or service on the unit.

  • Ensure the electrical supply matches the specifications of the pump (230 V / 450 W).
  • The unit must be installed on a stable, level surface.
  • Do not operate the pump dry. Always ensure the pump is primed with water before starting.
  • Keep children and pets away from the filter system during operation.
  • All electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician and comply with local regulations.
  • Protect the electrical components from water exposure. The unit has an IPX5 protection rating, but direct water jets should be avoided.
  • Use only recommended filter media (quartz sand, approx. 15 kg).

3. Product Overview

The Steinbach Speed Clean Comfort 50 is a robust sand filter system designed for optimal water clarity. Key components include:

  • Sand Filter Tank: Made of durable polyethylene, designed to hold approximately 15 kg of quartz sand.
  • Self-Priming Pump: A powerful 450W pump with a pre-cleaner to capture larger debris before it reaches the filter.
  • 7-Way Valve: Provides multiple operational modes for comprehensive pool maintenance.
  • Manometer: Integrated pressure gauge to monitor filter performance.
  • Integrated Timer: Allows for automated operation cycles.

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for the correct assembly and installation of your sand filter system:

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the packaging. Verify all components are present as shown in the exploded view.
  2. Exploded view of the Steinbach sand filter system components including the filter tank, pump, valve, and hoses

Figure 4.1: Exploded view of the system components.

  3. Positioning: Place the filter system on a firm, level surface near your pool, ensuring it is protected from direct weather exposure if possible.
  4. Fill with Sand: Ensure the drain plug is closed. Fill the filter tank with approximately 15 kg of quartz filter sand (grain size 0.7-1.2 mm). Ensure the standpipe inside the tank is centered during filling.
  5. Assemble Valve Head: Attach the 7-way valve head to the top of the filter tank. Ensure the O-ring is correctly seated. The large clamp that secures the lid can be challenging to fit; applying a very light coat of Vaseline to the clamping surfaces can aid in sliding it over the flange. A rubber mallet may be used gently to ensure a secure fit.
  6. Connect Pump: Attach the pump to the filter tank. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.
  7. Close-up view of the pump with its pre-cleaner and hose connections

  8. Hose Connections: Connect the hoses from your pool to the filter system. The system supports both 32 mm and 38 mm diameter hoses. Ensure all hose clamps are tightened securely.
  9. Electrical Connection: Connect the pump to a grounded electrical outlet (230V). Ensure the power cord is not damaged and is routed safely.

5. Operating Instructions

The 7-way valve controls the operation of the filter system. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

  • Filter: For normal filtration. Water passes through the sand, trapping debris, and returns to the pool.
  • Rinse: Used after backwashing to settle the sand and flush any remaining dirt to waste.
  • Circulate: Bypasses the filter, circulating water directly back to the pool. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  • Backwash: Reverses water flow through the filter to clean the sand bed, sending dirty water to waste. Perform when manometer pressure rises by 0.2-0.3 bar above normal operating pressure.
  • Closed: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use when cleaning the pump's pre-cleaner basket or performing other maintenance.
  • Empty: Drains water directly from the pool to waste, bypassing the filter.
  • Winterize: Position for winter storage, allowing water to drain from the valve.

Timer Operation: The integrated timer allows you to set automatic operating cycles. Refer to the control panel for setting specific run times (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 24 hours).

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your filter system.

  • Backwashing: Perform backwash every 1-2 weeks, or when the manometer reading indicates increased pressure (0.2-0.3 bar above initial clean filter pressure). Backwash until the water in the sight glass runs clear, then rinse for 30-60 seconds.
  • Sand Replacement: The filter sand should be replaced approximately every 2 years, depending on usage and water quality.
  • Pre-Cleaner Basket: Regularly check and clean the pre-cleaner basket in the pump. Turn off the pump, close the valve to 'Closed', open the pre-cleaner lid, remove and clean the basket, then reassemble.
  • Winterization: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the filter tank, pump, and hoses. Store the pump and valve in a frost-free environment.

7. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their solutions:

  • Low Water Flow:
    - Check if the pump's pre-cleaner basket is clogged. Clean if necessary.
    - Check if the filter sand needs backwashing. Perform backwash and rinse.
    - Ensure all hoses are free of kinks and blockages.
    - Verify the pump is properly primed.
  • Cloudy Pool Water:
    - The filter sand may be dirty or exhausted. Perform backwash or consider replacing the sand.
    - Check pool chemical balance (pH, chlorine levels).
    - Ensure the filter system is running for sufficient hours daily.
  • Leaks at Connections:
    - Tighten all hose clamps and threaded connections.
    - Check O-rings and gaskets for proper seating and damage. Replace if necessary.
    - For the main clamp on the filter tank, ensure it is securely fitted. A rubber mallet can help achieve a tight seal.
  • Pump Not Starting:
    - Check electrical connection and power supply.
    - Ensure the ON/OFF switch is in the correct position.
    - Verify the timer settings if applicable.
