White's Goldmaster GMT Metal Detector (Model 800-0294) Instruction Manual

Brand: White's Electronics

1. Introduction

The White's Goldmaster GMT is a specialized metal detector engineered for gold prospecting across diverse terrains. Operating at a 48 KHz frequency, it is optimized for detecting gold nuggets, ranging from small flakes to larger pieces, and can also locate coins. Its waterproof search coil enables effective use in wet environments, including streams and rivers. The GMT incorporates an iron target analyzer and provides manual controls for experienced users, alongside recommended initial settings to facilitate ease of operation for all users.

2. Key Features

  • Auto Ground Balance: Automatically adjusts to ground mineralization for stable operation.
  • Optional Audio: Customizable audio settings for target identification.
  • Iron ID - Bar Graph: Visual indicator displaying the probability of a target being iron.
  • Displays Magnetic Minerals: Shows the amount of magnetic minerals present in the ground.
  • Model Number: 800-0294

3. Setup and Assembly

Before operating your Goldmaster GMT, ensure all components are securely assembled. The detector typically consists of a control housing, a shaft, and a search coil. Connect the search coil cable to the control housing and secure it to the shaft. Insert the required batteries into the battery compartment.

Refer to the diagrams for proper attachment of the search coil and adjustment of the shaft length for comfortable use. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent signal interference.

4. Operating Instructions

The Goldmaster GMT offers several controls to optimize your metal detecting experience, especially in gold-rich areas.

4.1. Power On/Off and Gain Control

To power on the detector, rotate the Gain knob (refer to Figure 3.2) clockwise from the 'Off' position. The Gain control adjusts the detector's sensitivity. A higher gain setting increases detection depth but may also increase sensitivity to ground noise. Start with the recommended initial setting and adjust as needed for stable operation.

4.2. Ground Balance

Ground balancing is crucial for gold prospecting to eliminate false signals from mineralized ground. The GMT offers three methods:

  • Auto Ground Balance: Set the 'Ground Balance' switch (Figure 3.2) to 'Fast AutoTrac®'. This mode continuously tracks and adjusts to changes in ground mineralization.
  • Ground Grab (GND. BAL. GRAB): Press and hold the 'GRAB' button (Figure 3.1) while pumping the coil over a clean patch of ground. Release the button once the audio stabilizes. This quickly sets a precise ground balance.
  • Manual Ground Balance: For fine-tuning, use the 'MANUAL GND. BAL.' '+' and '-' buttons (Figure 3.1) to adjust the ground balance manually. This is often used after a 'Ground Grab' for slight adjustments.

4.3. Audio Threshold

The Audio Threshold knob (Figure 3.2) sets the continuous background hum. Adjust it to a faint, barely audible hum. This allows you to hear subtle changes in audio that indicate a target.

4.4. Variable S.A.T. Speed

The Variable S.A.T. Speed (Self Adjusting Threshold) knob (Figure 3.2) controls how quickly the detector recovers from ground signals. A faster speed (higher number) is useful in trashy areas or highly mineralized ground, while a slower speed (lower number) can provide greater depth in cleaner ground.

4.5. Trigger Switch Functions

The Trigger Switch (under the meter, Figure 3.2) has multiple functions:

  • LOCK FORWARD: Search with Audio Iron I.D. engaged.
  • CENTER POSITION: Search without Audio Iron I.D.
  • SQUEEZE & HOLD: Analyze targets with Audio Iron I.D. The meter Iron I.D. is always ON.

4.6. Iron ID - Bar Graph Display

The display (Figure 3.1) features an Iron ID bar graph that indicates the percentage probability of a detected target being iron. This helps in discriminating between desirable targets (like gold) and ferrous junk. A lower percentage suggests a higher likelihood of a non-ferrous target.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Goldmaster GMT metal detector.

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the detector with a damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, and moisture. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a dry, cool place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Care: Always use fresh, high-quality batteries. Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears or when performance degrades.
  • Coil Protection: Consider using a coil cover to protect the search coil from scratches and impacts.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Goldmaster GMT, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are fresh. Verify all connections are secure.
  • Erratic Signals/Chatter: Re-ground balance the detector. Reduce the Gain setting. Check for electromagnetic interference from power lines, cell phones, or other electronic devices. Ensure the search coil cable is not loose or damaged.
  • Poor Depth: Ensure the Gain setting is optimized for your ground conditions. Re-ground balance. Check battery levels.
  • No Audio: Check headphone connection if applicable. Adjust Audio Threshold.

If problems persist after attempting these steps, contact customer support.
