3. Safety Information
Please observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the thermometer:
- Do not immerse the thermometer display unit in water or place it in a dishwasher. The probe is designed for immersion, but the main unit is not waterproof.
- Handle the stainless steel stem with care, as it will become very hot during use. Always use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when handling the probe after it has been exposed to high temperatures.
- Keep batteries out of reach of children. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention.
- Do not expose the thermometer to extreme temperatures outside its specified operating range (14°F to 450°F / -10°C to +232°C).
- Ensure the probe tip does not touch the bottom or sides of the pot, as this can lead to inaccurate readings and potential damage to the probe from direct heat.
4. Components
Your CDN Digital Candy Thermometer DTC450 package includes the following components:
- Digital Thermometer Display Unit
- 8.25-inch Stainless Steel Temperature Probe
- Adjustable Stainless Steel Pot Clip
- 2 x LR44 Batteries (pre-installed or included separately)
5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
The thermometer requires 2 LR44 batteries. These are typically included. If not pre-installed or if replacement is needed:
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the display unit.
- Open the compartment cover.
- Insert the 2 LR44 batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
5.2 Attaching the Pot Clip
The adjustable pot clip allows for secure placement of the thermometer in various pots and pans:
- Slide the thermometer stem through the opening in the pot clip.
- Adjust the clip along the stem to position the probe tip at the desired depth in your liquid, ensuring it does not touch the bottom of the pot.
- Secure the clip to the rim of your pot. The clip is designed to hold the stem parallel to the side of the pan, offering different angles for accurate readings.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Power On/Off
The thermometer automatically powers on when the probe is inserted into a liquid or when a button is pressed. It will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
6.2 Temperature Unit Selection (°F/°C)
To switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C), locate the F/C button on the display unit and press it. The display will change accordingly.
6.3 Using Preset Candy Stages
The DTC450 comes with 7 preset candy stages for common sugar temperatures:
- Soft Ball
- Firm Ball
- Hard Ball
- Soft Crack
- Hard Crack
- Caramel
- Jelly
To select a preset stage, press the 'MODE' button repeatedly until the desired stage is displayed. The thermometer will then monitor the temperature and alert you as it approaches and reaches the target.
6.4 Programmable Temperature Setting
In addition to preset stages, you can set a custom target temperature:
- Press the 'MODE' button until the programmable stage (often indicated as 'TEMP' or 'PROG') is selected.
- Use the 'SET' or arrow buttons (if available) to adjust the target temperature to your desired value.
- Confirm the setting (if required, by pressing 'SET' again or waiting for the display to revert).
6.5 Audio/Visual Alerts
The thermometer provides three types of alerts:
- Pre-Alert: A red LED flashes approximately 3 degrees before the target temperature is reached, providing an early warning.
- Target-Alert: An audible alarm and flashing light indicate when the set temperature has been reached.
- Over-Alert: If the temperature exceeds the target, a distinct alarm will sound, indicating that the candy stage has been passed.

8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your thermometer, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Display is blank or dim. | Low or dead batteries. | Replace batteries with new LR44 batteries. Ensure correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate temperature readings. | Probe tip touching bottom/side of pot; insufficient immersion depth; probe not clean. | Ensure probe tip is suspended in the center of the liquid, not touching surfaces. Ensure adequate immersion depth (at least 2 inches). Clean probe thoroughly. |
| Alerts not sounding. | Volume too low (if adjustable); malfunction. | Check if there's a volume setting (refer to specific model features if available). Replace batteries. If issue persists, contact customer support. |
| Thermometer not turning on. | Dead batteries; unit malfunction. | Replace batteries. If still unresponsive, the unit may be faulty. |
