Product Overview

Figure 1: Rear panel of the Rolls MX153 Mix Mate Mixer. This view displays the 15 VDC power input, stereo RCA outputs, three sets of stereo RCA source inputs, two XLR microphone inputs (Mic 1 and Mic 2), and a bank of six DIP switches for various configurations. The model number MX153 is visible on the right side.
The MX153 features a well-organized rear panel for all connections. On the left, you'll find the 15 VDC power input. Adjacent to it are the stereo RCA outputs. To the right, three sets of stereo RCA jacks are labeled "SOURCE INPUTS 1, 2, 3". Further right are the XLR inputs for "MIC 2" and "MIC 1". A bank of six DIP switches is located between the source inputs and microphone inputs, providing access to advanced settings. The front panel (not shown in this image) typically houses level controls for each input and tone controls.
Setup
1. Power Connection
- Connect the included 12VDC power adapter (Rolls PS27) to the "15 VDC" input jack on the rear panel of the MX153.
- Plug the power adapter into a suitable AC outlet.
2. Input Connections
- Microphone Inputs (MIC 1, MIC 2): Connect dynamic or condenser microphones to the balanced XLR jacks labeled "MIC 1" and "MIC 2".
- Source Inputs (SOURCE INPUTS 1, 2, 3): Connect stereo audio sources such as CD players, tuners, or video players to the RCA input jacks. Source 3 also has a front 1/8" jack for MP3 players or similar devices.
3. Output Connections
- Connect the stereo RCA outputs labeled "OUTPUT" on the rear panel to your amplifier, powered speakers, or other audio receiving equipment.
4. DIP Switch Configuration
The MX153 features a series of six DIP switches on the rear panel for advanced configuration. "OFF=UP" and "ON=DOWN".
| Switch No. | Function | OFF (Up) | ON (Down) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Phantom Power MIC 1 | Off | On (12VDC) |
| 2 | Phantom Power MIC 2 | Off | On (12VDC) |
| 3 | Source 3 Mono Sum | Stereo | Mono |
| 4 | Overall Output Sum | Stereo | Mono |
| 5 | Source 3 Priority Ducking | Off | On (Source 3 mutes other sources) |
| 6 | Mic 1 Paging Priority | Off | On (Mic 1 mutes other mic and sources 1 & 2) |
Note: Adjust DIP switches before powering on the unit for best results.
Operating Instructions
1. Level Adjustments
- Each microphone channel (Mic 1, Mic 2) has an independent Level control on the front panel.
- Source 1, Source 2, and Source 3 each have their own Level adjustments.
- Adjust these controls to achieve the desired balance between all connected audio sources.
2. Tone Controls
- Microphone channels feature individual Tone controls to adjust the bass or treble response.
- Sources 1 and 2 share combined Bass and Treble controls.
- Source 3 has a Level adjustment only, without dedicated tone controls.
3. Priority Ducking
- If DIP Switch 5 (Source 3 Priority Ducking) is ON, audio from Source 3 will automatically reduce the volume of other source inputs. This is useful for jukebox applications where the jukebox needs to take priority.
- If DIP Switch 6 (Mic 1 Paging Priority) is ON, audio from Microphone 1 will automatically reduce the volume of Microphone 2 and Source Inputs 1 and 2. This is ideal for paging announcements.
4. Mono/Stereo Output
- DIP Switch 4 allows you to sum the overall output to mono if desired, which can be useful for certain sound reinforcement setups.
Maintenance
- Keep the unit clean by wiping with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Ensure proper ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating.
- Regularly check all cable connections for secure fit and signs of wear.
- Store the mixer in a cool, dry place when not in use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No audio output | Incorrect power connection; Output cables disconnected; Input levels too low; Amplifier/speakers off or muted. | Verify power adapter is securely connected and plugged in; Check all output cables; Increase input level controls; Ensure connected amplifier/speakers are on and unmuted. |
| No microphone signal | Microphone not connected; Mic level too low; Phantom power off (for condenser mics); Faulty microphone/cable. | Ensure microphone is securely connected to the correct XLR input; Increase mic level control; If using a condenser mic, check DIP switch for phantom power (Switches 1 & 2); Test with a known working microphone and cable. |
| Distorted audio | Input levels too high (clipping); Faulty cables; Incorrect impedance matching. | Reduce input levels; Check and replace faulty cables; Ensure input/output impedance compatibility with connected devices. |
| Priority ducking not working | DIP switch not set correctly; Input signal too low to trigger ducking. | Verify DIP Switch 5 (Source 3 Priority) or 6 (Mic 1 Paging) is in the ON (down) position; Ensure the triggering input has sufficient signal level. |
