Camco Propane Double-Stage Auto-Changeover Regulator

Model: 59005

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Camco Propane Double-Stage Auto-Changeover Regulator, Model 59005. This regulator is designed for recreational vehicles (RVs) equipped with dual propane tank hookups. It ensures a continuous propane supply by automatically switching from an empty primary tank to a full reserve tank.

Safety Information

WARNING: Propane is highly flammable and can cause serious injury or death if not handled properly. Always follow all local and national codes and regulations for propane installation and use. Perform leak tests after any installation or connection changes.

Proposition 65 Warning: This product may contain materials cautioned by California Proposition 65.

  • Ensure adequate ventilation when working with propane.
  • Do not smoke or use open flames near propane tanks or connections.
  • Always turn off propane supply at the tanks before performing any maintenance or installation.
  • This regulator is designed for outdoor use and must be installed in a covered area.

Product Features

  • Automatically switches from primary to reserve tank when primary is empty.
  • Allows removal of empty cylinder for refill without interrupting propane supply.
  • Double-stage design maintains constant gas pressure under changing demand and conditions.
  • Primary cylinder capacity: 210,000 BTU/hr.
  • Reserve cylinder capacity: 130,000 BTU/hr.
  • Inlets: 1/4" SAE inverted flare.
  • Outlet: 3/8" NPT female pipe thread.

Package Contents

The package includes:

  • 1 x Camco Propane Double-Stage Auto-Changeover Regulator (Model 59005)

Note: Mounting screws and bracket may not be included and may require reuse of existing hardware or separate purchase.

Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation:

  1. Mounting the Regulator: Securely mount the regulator to the RV frame or designated area. Ensure the regulator is installed in a covered location. The vent opening should face vertically downwards.
  2. Connecting Inlet Hoses: Connect the pigtail hoses from your propane tanks to the 1/4" SAE inverted flare inlets on the regulator. These connections are designed to seal without thread sealant. Do not use Teflon tape or pipe dope on inverted flare fittings.
  3. Connecting Outlet Line: Connect the RV's propane supply line to the 3/8" NPT female outlet on the regulator. Use yellow Teflon tape or appropriate pipe thread sealant specifically designed for propane gas on NPT pipe threads to ensure a leak-free connection.
  4. Leak Test: After all connections are made, slowly open the valves on both propane tanks. Apply a soap and water solution to all connections. Look for bubbles, which indicate a leak. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection and retest. If leaks persist, turn off the propane supply and consult a qualified technician.

Operating Instructions

The Camco Auto-Changeover Regulator simplifies propane management:

  1. Selecting the Primary Tank: Turn the black lever on the regulator towards the propane tank you wish to designate as the primary supply.
  2. Automatic Changeover: When the primary tank becomes empty, the regulator will automatically switch to draw propane from the reserve tank. The indicator on the regulator will change color (typically from green to red) to show that the primary tank is empty and the system is now using the reserve tank.
  3. Replacing an Empty Tank: Once the indicator shows the primary tank is empty, you can close the valve on the empty tank, disconnect it, and have it refilled. The system will continue to operate on the reserve tank without interruption. After refilling, reconnect the tank, open its valve, and turn the lever back to this tank to make it the new primary.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures safe and efficient operation:

  • Leak Checks: Periodically perform a leak test using a soap and water solution on all propane connections, especially after replacing tanks or during seasonal checks.
  • Hose Inspection: Inspect pigtail hoses for any signs of cracks, wear, or damage. Replace damaged hoses immediately.
  • O-Ring Inspection: If your pigtail hoses use O-rings, inspect them for cracks or deterioration. Replace as needed. Keep spare O-rings away from direct sunlight.
  • Regulator Condition: Ensure the regulator is free from physical damage or corrosion.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No propane flow or low pressure.Tank valve closed, empty tank, excess flow valve tripped, regulator malfunction.Ensure tank valves are fully open. Check tank levels. Close tank valve, wait 30 seconds, slowly reopen to reset excess flow valve. Check regulator indicator.
Indicator remains red after switching to a full tank.Tank valve not fully open, faulty pigtail hose, regulator issue.Ensure tank valve is fully open. Check for kinks or damage in the pigtail hose. If problem persists, a professional inspection may be required.
Gas smell.Propane leak.Immediately turn off all propane tank valves. Ventilate the area. Perform a leak test with soap and water solution. Do not use any ignition sources. If unable to locate and fix the leak, evacuate and contact emergency services.
Noisy operation (hissing/whistling).Normal operation, or potential issue with gas flow. Some regulators may produce minor noise during operation. If the noise is excessive or accompanied by other issues, check for leaks or consult a professional.
Accidental shut-off when covering tanks.Lever position susceptible to bumping.Exercise caution when placing tank covers to avoid bumping the changeover lever into the 'off' position. Ensure the lever is securely set to the desired tank.
