4. Components and Display

This image displays the Testo 810 thermometer from the front. The large digital display shows both infrared (IR) surface temperature and ambient air temperature. Below the display are three control buttons: an up arrow button, a 'Mode' button, and a power button. The infrared sensor and ambient air sensor are located at the top of the device.

This image shows the Testo 810 thermometer being held in a user's hand, emphasizing its compact and ergonomic design. This perspective highlights its portability and ease of use for single-handed operation.
4.1. Control Buttons
- Power Button (⏻): Turns the instrument on or off.
- Up Arrow Button (▲): Used for navigating menus or increasing values (e.g., emissivity).
- Mode Button: Cycles through display modes (e.g., Hold, Min/Max, ∆T).
4.2. Display Elements
- IR Temperature: Main large digits, showing non-contact surface temperature.
- Air Temperature: Smaller digits, showing ambient air temperature.
- ∆T (Delta T): Displays the difference between IR and air temperature.
- Hold Indicator: Appears when the Hold function is active.
- Min/Max Indicator: Appears when displaying minimum or maximum values.
- Emissivity Setting (ε): Indicates the current emissivity value.
- Battery Indicator: Shows remaining battery life.
5. Setup
5.1. Battery Installation
The Testo 810 requires 2 AAA batteries (included).
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the rear of the instrument.
- Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
- Insert the 2 AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
6. Operation
6.1. Power On/Off
- To turn on: Press the ⏻ button. The display will illuminate and show current readings.
- To turn off: Press and hold the ⏻ button until the display turns off. The instrument also features an auto-off function to conserve battery life.
6.2. Taking Measurements (IR and Ambient)
The Testo 810 simultaneously measures both surface and air temperatures.
- Ensure the instrument is powered on.
- Point the infrared sensor (at the top of the device) towards the surface you wish to measure. The 1-point laser will indicate the center of the measurement spot.
- The IR temperature will be displayed in the larger digits, while the ambient air temperature will be shown in smaller digits.
- For accurate IR readings, ensure the distance to the object is appropriate for the 6:1 optics ratio (e.g., at 6 inches distance, the measurement spot is 1 inch in diameter).
6.3. Adjusting Emissivity (ε)
Emissivity is crucial for accurate infrared temperature measurement. Different materials have different emissivity values. The Testo 810 allows adjustment from 0.10 to 1.00.
- With the instrument on, press the Mode button repeatedly until the emissivity symbol (ε) appears on the display.
- Use the ▲ button to adjust the emissivity value. Refer to standard emissivity tables for common materials.
- Press the Mode button again to confirm the setting and return to measurement mode.
6.4. Hold and Min/Max Functions
- Hold Function: During measurement, briefly press the Mode button. The current readings will be frozen on the display, indicated by a 'Hold' symbol. Press Mode again to resume live measurement.
- Min/Max Values: While in measurement mode, press the Mode button repeatedly to cycle through the minimum (Min) and maximum (Max) recorded temperatures for both IR and air. The display will show 'Min' or 'Max' accordingly.
- Delta T (∆T): Continue pressing the Mode button to view the temperature difference between the IR surface and ambient air.
7. Maintenance
7.1. Cleaning
To ensure accurate readings and prolong the life of your instrument:
- Wipe the instrument casing with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Carefully clean the infrared lens with a soft, lint-free cloth or a lens cleaning wipe. Avoid touching the lens directly with fingers.
7.2. Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator shows low power, replace the batteries as described in Section 5.1. Always use fresh AAA alkaline batteries.
7.3. Storage
When not in use, store the Testo 810 in its protective cap in a dry, dust-free environment within the specified operating temperature range.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Testo 810, refer to the table below:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Instrument does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly inserted batteries. | Check battery polarity or replace batteries. |
| Inaccurate IR temperature readings. | Incorrect emissivity setting; dirty IR lens; object too far/close. | Adjust emissivity; clean lens; ensure proper measurement distance. |
| Display is dim or flickering. | Low battery. | Replace batteries. |
| Laser not visible. | Laser malfunction or very bright ambient light. | Test in a darker environment. If still not visible, contact support. |
