Soundstream BX-20Z Digital Bass Reconstruction Processor User Manual
Model: BX-20Z
Introduction
About Your Soundstream BX-20Z
The Soundstream BX-20Z is a sophisticated Digital Bass Reconstruction Processor designed to enhance the low-frequency performance of your audio system. It accurately recreates and injects low-frequency information back into the signal path, providing a richer and more impactful bass experience. This unit features a dash-mount remote bass control for convenient adjustments and includes a bass equalization circuit to contour the restored bass to your speakers and subwoofers. Its PFM Subsonic filter switch helps protect your subwoofers and fine-tune the bass response, while the bass maximizer indicator provides visual feedback on its operation.

Product Overview
Figure 1: Soundstream BX-20Z Main Unit and Dash Remote. The main unit features various controls and connections. On the left side, there are two rotary controls labeled "WIDE" and "SWEEP" with MIN/MAX settings, used for bass control. Below these are "High Inputs" with positive and negative terminals for Left and Right channels. In the center, an "OUTPUT VOLTAGE" switch allows selection between -10V+, -7.5V, -5V, and -2.5V. To its right, an "INPUT GROUNDING" switch toggles between Balanced and Unbalanced inputs. Further right, a "GROUND ISOLATION" switch offers IS01 and IS02 options. The right side of the unit includes "Balanced Inputs" (RCA) and "Outputs" (RCA) for Left and Right channels, and a "Dash Remote" port. The top panel prominently displays the "SOUNDSTREAM BX-20Z DIGITAL BASS MACHINE" logo and a spider-like design. The separate dash remote unit, shown in the foreground, has two rotary controls: "PFM SUBSONIC FILTER" (with 80Hz and MPX markings) and "BASS LEVEL" (with MIN and MAX markings).
Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. It is recommended that installation be performed by a qualified professional.
Power Connections
- +12V (BATT): Connect this terminal directly to the positive (+) terminal of the vehicle's battery. Use appropriate gauge wire and an inline fuse.
- REM (Remote): Connect this terminal to the remote turn-on output of your head unit or other switched 12V source. This will turn the BX-20Z on and off with your audio system.
- GND (Ground): Connect this terminal securely to a clean, unpainted metal surface of the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a good electrical connection.
Audio Connections
- High Inputs: For connecting to speaker-level outputs from a head unit without RCA pre-outs. Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) wires for Left (L) and Right (R) channels.
- Balanced Inputs (RCA): Connect the RCA outputs from your head unit or other audio source to these inputs.
- Outputs (RCA): Connect these RCA outputs to the inputs of your amplifier(s).
Grounding and Isolation
- INPUT GROUNDING: This switch allows you to select between balanced and unbalanced input modes. Choose the setting that provides the cleanest signal with your source unit.
- GROUND ISOLATION: Use the IS01 or IS02 settings to help eliminate ground loop noise. Experiment with both settings to find the one that minimizes noise in your system.
Dash Remote Installation
Mount the dash remote in a convenient location within reach of the driver. Connect the remote cable from the dash remote to the "Dash Remote" port on the main BX-20Z unit.
Operation
Digital Bass Reconstruction
The BX-20Z's primary function is to restore and enhance the low-frequency information in your audio signal. This process dynamically analyzes the audio and recreates missing bass frequencies, providing a fuller and more dynamic sound.
Controls and Adjustments
- WIDE Control: This rotary control adjusts the center frequency of the bass restoration. Turning it towards "MAX" will broaden the range of frequencies affected by the bass enhancement.
- SWEEP Control: This rotary control adjusts the width of the bass restoration. It allows you to fine-tune how narrow or wide the restored bass frequencies are applied.
- OUTPUT VOLTAGE Switch: Selects the desired output voltage level for the RCA outputs. Choose the setting that best matches the input sensitivity of your amplifier(s) to prevent clipping or distortion. Options include -10V+, -7.5V, -5V, and -2.5V.
- Bass Maximizer Indicator: Two LED indicators on the unit will flash when the bass maximization circuit is actively processing and enhancing the low frequencies.
- PFM SUBSONIC FILTER (Dash Remote): This control helps protect your subwoofers from damaging ultra-low frequencies and allows you to fine-tune the bass response. Adjust it to prevent excessive cone excursion and improve sound clarity. Settings include 80Hz and MPX.
- BASS LEVEL (Dash Remote): This control allows you to adjust the overall output level of the restored bass from your listening position. Turn it towards "MAX" for more bass, and "MIN" for less.
Maintenance
The Soundstream BX-20Z requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the unit. Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure the unit is installed in a location with adequate airflow to prevent overheating.
- Connections: Periodically check all power and audio connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power | Blown fuse; improper power/ground connection; remote wire not connected. | Check inline fuse; verify +12V, Ground, and Remote connections are secure and correct. |
| No Sound | Incorrect audio input/output connections; amplifier not powered on; source unit issue. | Verify RCA or High Input connections; ensure amplifier is on; check source unit output. |
| Distorted Sound | Output voltage too high; input signal too strong; improper gain settings on amplifier. | Adjust OUTPUT VOLTAGE switch to a lower setting; reduce source unit volume; adjust amplifier gain. |
| Excessive Noise (Hiss, Whine) | Ground loop; poor grounding; signal interference. | Experiment with the GROUND ISOLATION switch (IS01/IS02); ensure a clean ground connection; route RCA cables away from power wires. |
