Steinel RS 16 L S Glass Ceiling Light with 360° Motion Detector User Manual

Model: RS 16 L S | Brand: STEINEL

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of your Steinel RS 16 L S Glass Ceiling Light with 360° Motion Detector. Please read these instructions carefully before use and retain them for future reference.

The Steinel RS 16 L S is an economical high-frequency detector lamp (275 mm diameter) designed for wall and ceiling installation in indoor areas such as corridors, entrances, stairwells, or bathrooms. It features an E27 socket for bulbs up to 60W maximum. The mouth-blown opal white glass body ensures uniform and soft light distribution. An invisible 360° high-frequency sensor detects even the smallest movements, activating the light, which then switches off after a user-defined time.

2. Safety Information

Warning: Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with national wiring regulations and local electrical codes.

  • Ensure the power supply is disconnected before installation, maintenance, or bulb replacement.
  • Do not attempt to modify the product. Any modifications may void the warranty and pose safety risks.
  • This product is designed for indoor use only (IP44 rating). Do not expose to direct water spray or extreme weather conditions.
  • Use only E27 bulbs with a maximum wattage of 60W.
  • Keep packaging materials away from children.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:

  • Steinel RS 16 L S Ceiling Light unit

5. Setup and Installation

The Steinel RS 16 L S is designed for straightforward installation on ceilings or walls. Ensure the power supply is off before proceeding.

5.1 Mounting Location

Select a suitable indoor location such as corridors, stairwells, bathrooms, kitchens, or cellars. The IP44 rating makes it suitable for areas with moderate moisture, but not for direct water exposure.

5.2 Wiring

The lamp and sensor share the same connection, requiring only two wires for power. Connect the live (L) and neutral (N) wires from your mains supply to the corresponding terminals on the fixture. Ensure all connections are secure.

5.3 Securing the Fixture

Use the provided mounting hardware to securely attach the plastic chassis to the ceiling or wall. Once the chassis is mounted and wired, install an E27 bulb (max. 60W) into the socket. The glass cover attaches without screws using a bayonet fitting, allowing for tool-free bulb changes.

6. Operating Instructions

The integrated high-frequency sensor provides automatic light activation based on movement and ambient light levels. The settings can be adjusted using the rotary controls located on the fixture.

6.1 Sensor Functionality

The 360° high-frequency sensor detects movement independently of temperature. It can detect objects through light building materials such as wood, glass, and lightweight partitions. This allows for discreet integration of the sensor behind the glass cover.

Figure 3: Diagram showing the principle of high-frequency sensor detection. The sensor emits microwaves that bounce off objects, detecting movement even through light barriers.

6.2 Adjusting Settings

The following settings can be adjusted via rotary controls:

  • Detection Range: Electronically adjustable from 3 to 8 meters. Rotate the control to set the desired detection radius.
  • Twilight Threshold: Adjustable from 2 to 2000 lux. This setting determines the ambient light level at which the sensor becomes active. For example, a lower lux value means the light will only activate in darker conditions.
  • Time Setting: Adjustable from 5 seconds to 15 minutes. This controls how long the light remains on after motion is detected and no further motion is sensed.

6.3 Additional Load Connection

The fixture includes a connection option for additional loads, such as a bathroom fan or WC ventilation system, allowing them to be activated simultaneously with the light.

6.4 Permanent Lighting

The interior lighting with motion detector is designed for permanent lighting operation if desired, depending on the specific wiring configuration and settings.

7. Maintenance

Regular cleaning and inspection will help maintain the performance and appearance of your Steinel RS 16 L S ceiling light.

  • Cleaning: Disconnect power before cleaning. Wipe the glass cover and plastic chassis with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the surfaces.
  • Bulb Replacement: Ensure power is disconnected. The glass cover can be easily removed via its bayonet fitting for tool-free bulb replacement. Replace with an E27 bulb, maximum 60W.
  • Inspection: Periodically check for any signs of damage to the wiring or fixture. If any damage is found, disconnect power and consult a qualified electrician.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Steinel RS 16 L S, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
Light does not turn on.
  • Check power supply.
  • Ensure bulb is correctly installed and functional.
  • Adjust twilight threshold (sensor may be inactive if ambient light is too high).
  • Check sensor detection range settings.
Light stays on continuously.
  • Constant motion within detection range.
  • Time setting is too long.
  • Sensor malfunction (consult support).
Light turns on without apparent motion.
  • Detection range is set too high, picking up motion outside the intended area (e.g., through thin walls). Reduce sensitivity.
  • Interference from other high-frequency devices.
Incompatible with LED bulbs.
  • Some non-dimmable LED bulbs may not function correctly with motion sensors. Use dimmable LED bulbs or incandescent/halogen bulbs.

9. Warranty and Support
