Bennett Marine ST16 Performance Sport Tab System Instruction Manual

1. Product Overview

The Bennett Marine ST16 Performance Sport Tab System is engineered for precise offshore attitude correction across a wide range of water conditions. This system enhances boat performance by allowing faster planing, maintaining plane at intermediate speeds, correcting list and uneven loads, and improving fuel efficiency. It is recommended for boats 25 feet and longer.

The system features two robust, powder-coated black stainless steel tabs, secured with durable mounting plates and fasteners. The ST16 Sport Tabs are actuated and held firmly in position by dual actuators on each tab. The complete kit includes a hydraulic power unit, all necessary wiring, tubing, and hardware.

2. Safety Information

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during installation and maintenance.
  • Ensure the boat's power is disconnected before performing any electrical work.
  • Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning installation or operation.
  • Consult a qualified marine technician if you are unsure about any part of the installation or operation process.
  • Keep hands and clothing clear of moving parts during operation.

3. Components List

The Bennett ST16 Performance Sport Tab System includes the following components:

  • Two (2) Powder-Coated Black Stainless Steel Trim Tabs (approx. 30.5 cm x 40.6 cm / 12 in x 16 in)
  • Dual Actuators (two per tab)
  • Hydraulic Power Unit
  • Mounting Plates and Fasteners
  • Wiring Harness
  • Hydraulic Tubing
  • Remote Control Unit
  • All necessary hardware for installation

4. Installation and Setup

This section provides general installation guidelines. Refer to detailed diagrams (not included in this manual) for specific wiring and plumbing instructions.

  1. Unpacking and Inspection: Carefully unpack all components and inspect for any shipping damage. Verify all parts listed in the Components List are present.
  2. Mounting Location: Select appropriate mounting locations on the transom, ensuring sufficient clearance for tab movement and actuator installation. Refer to the boat manufacturer's recommendations if available.
  3. Transom Preparation: Drill pilot holes for mounting plates and actuators. Apply marine sealant to all drilled holes to prevent water intrusion.
  4. Tab and Actuator Installation: Securely attach the trim tabs and actuators to the transom using the provided fasteners. Ensure actuators are properly aligned.
  5. Hydraulic Power Unit Installation: Mount the hydraulic power unit in a dry, accessible location within the boat, typically near the transom. Connect hydraulic tubing from the actuators to the power unit, ensuring proper routing and secure connections.
  6. Electrical Wiring: Connect the hydraulic power unit to the boat's electrical system according to the wiring diagram (not provided). Ensure proper fuse protection and secure all electrical connections.
  7. Control Switch Installation: Install the remote control unit at the helm in a convenient location. Connect the switch to the hydraulic power unit and boat's power supply.
  8. System Bleeding and Testing: Fill the hydraulic reservoir with approved hydraulic fluid. Operate the system through its full range of motion several times to bleed air from the lines. Check for leaks and proper operation of both tabs.

5. Operation

The ST16 Sport Tab System is controlled via a remote control unit. Use the control to adjust the trim tabs to achieve the desired boat attitude.

  • Planing: To get on plane faster, fully deploy the tabs (down position) when accelerating. As the boat planes, gradually retract the tabs (up position) to optimize speed and efficiency.
  • Correcting List: If the boat is listing to one side due to uneven load or wind, deploy the tab on the higher side to bring the boat level.
  • Optimizing Ride: Adjust tabs incrementally to achieve the smoothest ride and best performance in varying sea conditions.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Proper trim tab adjustment can significantly improve fuel efficiency by reducing drag and optimizing the boat's running angle.

6. Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the trim tabs, actuators, hydraulic lines, and electrical connections for wear, corrosion, or damage. Check for any signs of hydraulic fluid leaks.
  • Cleaning: Clean the trim tabs regularly to prevent marine growth buildup, which can affect performance. Use a soft brush and mild soap.
  • Hydraulic Fluid Check: Check the hydraulic fluid level in the power unit reservoir periodically. Top up with approved hydraulic fluid if necessary.
  • Fastener Check: Ensure all mounting fasteners are tight. Do not overtighten.
  • Corrosion Protection: Apply a suitable marine-grade anti-corrosion spray to metal components, especially in saltwater environments.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Tabs Not Moving:
    • Check electrical connections to the power unit and control switch.
    • Verify fuse is intact.
    • Check hydraulic fluid level.
    • Inspect hydraulic lines for kinks or damage.
  • Tabs Moving Unevenly:
    • Check hydraulic fluid level.
    • Inspect for air in the hydraulic lines (bleed system if necessary).
    • Examine actuators for damage or obstruction.
  • Excessive Noise from Power Unit:
    • Check hydraulic fluid level.
    • Ensure power unit is securely mounted.
  • Leaks:
    • Identify the source of the leak (actuator, hose, fitting, power unit).
    • Tighten connections or replace damaged components as needed. Consult a professional for significant leaks.
