Iomega Zip Disk 250MB (Model 32628) User Manual

PC/MAC Format - 8-Pack

Introduction

The Iomega Zip Disk 250MB is a high-capacity, removable magnetic disk storage medium designed for data backup, transfer, and storage. This manual provides essential information for the proper use and care of your Zip Disks, ensuring optimal performance and data integrity. These disks are compatible with both PC and Mac systems, provided a compatible Iomega Zip drive is used.

Setup

Before using your Iomega Zip Disk, ensure you have a compatible Iomega Zip drive (e.g., Zip 250 drive) connected to your computer. These disks are pre-formatted for general use on both PC and Mac operating systems.

  1. Unpack the Disks: Carefully remove the Zip Disks from their packaging.
  2. Prepare Your Drive: Ensure your Iomega Zip drive is properly installed and connected to your computer, and that the necessary drivers are installed. Refer to your Zip drive's manual for installation instructions.
  3. Initial Insertion: Gently slide the Zip Disk into the Zip drive's slot with the label facing upwards (or as indicated by your drive). The disk should click into place.
  4. System Recognition: Your operating system (Windows or macOS) should recognize the disk and display it as a removable drive.

Operating

Using the Iomega Zip Disk is similar to using any other removable storage device.

  • Saving Data: To save files, drag and drop them to the Zip Disk icon displayed on your computer. Alternatively, use the "Save As" function within applications and select the Zip Disk as the destination.
  • Retrieving Data: Open the Zip Disk icon to browse its contents. Double-click files to open them or drag them to your computer's hard drive.
  • Ejecting the Disk: Always eject the Zip Disk safely before physically removing it from the drive.
    • Windows: Right-click the Zip Disk icon in "This PC" or "My Computer" and select "Eject."
    • macOS: Drag the Zip Disk icon to the Trash or click the Eject icon next to the disk in Finder.
After the operating system confirms it's safe, press the eject button on the Zip drive (if available) or gently pull the disk out.
  • Formatting (Optional): While disks are pre-formatted, you can reformat them if needed. Be aware that formatting will erase all data on the disk.
    • Windows: Right-click the Zip Disk icon, select "Format," choose the desired file system (e.g., FAT32), and click "Start."
    • macOS: Open Disk Utility, select the Zip Disk, click "Erase," choose the format (e.g., Mac OS Extended or MS-DOS (FAT)), and click "Erase."

Maintenance

Proper care extends the life of your Zip Disks and protects your data.

  • Handle with Care: Avoid touching the exposed magnetic media inside the disk's shutter. Hold disks by their edges.
  • Storage: Store disks in their protective cases or sleeves when not in use. Keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, high humidity, and strong magnetic fields (e.g., speakers, monitors).
  • Keep Clean: Ensure the Zip drive's slot is free of dust and debris. Do not attempt to clean the disk's internal media.
  • Avoid Bending: Do not bend or apply excessive pressure to the disks.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Iomega Zip Disks, try the following steps:

  • Disk Not Recognized:
    • Ensure the Zip drive is powered on and properly connected to your computer.
    • Try inserting the disk again, ensuring it clicks into place.
    • Restart your computer.
    • Test with a different Zip Disk to determine if the issue is with the disk or the drive.
    • Verify that the correct drivers for your Zip drive are installed.
  • Read/Write Errors:
    • Ensure the disk is not write-protected (though Zip disks typically do not have a physical write-protect tab).
    • Check for sufficient free space on the disk.
    • Try copying smaller files first.
    • If errors persist, the disk may be damaged. Avoid using damaged disks to prevent data loss or drive damage.
  • Disk Stuck in Drive:
    • Attempt to eject the disk using the operating system's safe eject function.
    • If the drive has a manual eject hole (often a small pinhole), gently insert a straightened paperclip to manually eject the disk. Refer to your Zip drive's manual for this procedure.
