3. Setup
- Mounting the Microphone:
- Attach the A50D Drum Microphone Mount to the rim of your drum (snare, tom, etc.). Ensure it is securely fastened.
- Insert the PG56-LC microphone into the integrated stand mount on the A50D. Adjust the angle for optimal sound capture.
- Alternatively, for other applications, attach the integrated stand mount directly to a standard microphone stand using the 5/8 to 3/8 inches thread adapter if necessary.
- Connecting to Equipment:
- Connect an XLR cable (not included with LC version) to the microphone's XLR output.
- Connect the other end of the XLR cable to a microphone input on your mixing console, audio interface, or digital recorder.
- Ensure phantom power is turned OFF on your mixer/interface, as the PG56-LC is a dynamic microphone and does not require it.
4. Operating the Microphone
The Shure PG56-LC is designed for ease of use and robust performance. Follow these guidelines for optimal operation:
- Placement: Position the microphone close to the drum head or percussion instrument for a strong, clear signal. Experiment with distance and angle to achieve the desired tone.
- Cardioid Polar Pattern: The PG56-LC features a cardioid pickup pattern, meaning it is most sensitive to sound coming from directly in front of it and rejects sound from the sides and rear. This helps to isolate the instrument and reduce bleed from other sound sources on stage or in the studio.
- High SPL Handling: The dynamic cartridge is capable of handling extremely high sound pressure levels (SPL) without distortion, making it ideal for loud instruments like drums.
- Internal Shock Mount: The integrated internal shock mount helps to reduce handling noise and vibrations transmitted through the stand or drum mount, ensuring a cleaner audio signal.
- Frequency Response: The microphone's frequency response is specifically tailored for drum applications, providing a smooth and extended sound profile.
5. Maintenance
Proper care will ensure the longevity and performance of your Shure PG56-LC microphone:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the microphone body. For the grille, a soft brush can be used to remove debris. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Storage: When not in use, store the microphone in its included storage bag to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
- Handling: While durable, avoid dropping the microphone or subjecting it to excessive force, as this can damage the internal components.
- Cable Care: Always grasp the connector, not the cable, when plugging or unplugging. Avoid kinking or tightly winding the cable.
