3. Installation
The Air King BFQ50 features a SNAP-IN installation system designed for ease of setup. Follow these steps for a secure and efficient installation.
Tools and Materials Required:
- Drill
- Screwdriver (Phillips and Flathead)
- Hammer
- Measuring Tape
- Utility Knife or Drywall Saw
- Wire Strippers
- Duct Tape or Clamps
- Safety Glasses and Gloves
Installation Steps:
- Prepare the Opening:
Locate a suitable position between ceiling joists. The fan housing requires an opening of approximately 9-1/16 inches wide by 8-1/2 inches deep. For existing installations, you may need to enlarge the current opening. Ensure there is sufficient space for the 4-inch duct connection.

Figure 3.1: Fan Dimensions. This image provides the exact measurements of the fan housing (9-1/16" wide x 8-1/2" deep x 4-3/4" high) and the grill (10" x 10"), indicating it fits 9-1/8" x 8-11/16" openings. - Mount the Bracket:
The included bracket nails or screws directly to the ceiling joist. Position the bracket securely to support the fan housing.

Figure 3.2: SNAP-IN Mounting System. This composite image shows the three main steps: Nailing the mounting bracket to a joist, snapping the fan housing into the bracket, and connecting the electrical wiring. - Connect Ducting:
Attach a 4-inch duct to the fan's plastic duct collar. Ensure the connection is sealed with duct tape or clamps to prevent air leakage and maintain efficiency. The integrated backdraft damper should be oriented correctly to allow airflow out.

Figure 3.3: Standard 4" Round Duct Collar. This image highlights the 4-inch diameter of the fan's duct collar, indicating the required duct size for installation. - Wire the Fan:
Connect the electrical wiring according to local codes. Ensure the power is OFF at the circuit breaker before making any connections. This unit requires a 120V power supply and is UL listed for use over a tub or shower when installed in a GFCI protected branch circuit.

Figure 3.4: Low Profile Grill. This image shows the fan's white grill installed in a bathroom ceiling, demonstrating how it blends discreetly into the room's aesthetic. - Snap-in the Housing:
Once ducting and wiring are complete, carefully snap the fan housing into the pre-installed mounting bracket. Ensure it is securely seated.
- Install the Grill:
Attach the white polymeric grill to the fan housing. It is designed for easy fitting and removal for maintenance.
- Restore Power:
Turn on the power at the circuit breaker and test the fan's operation.
