The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 is a compact digital camera featuring a 10.1-megapixel CCD sensor, a 12x optical zoom lens with MEGA Optical Image Stabilization, and a 25mm ultra-wide-angle capability. It includes Intelligent Auto (iA) mode for simplified photography and a 2.7-inch LCD for easy viewing.

Setup
1. Charging the Battery
Before first use, fully charge the supplied battery.
- Insert the battery into the battery charger. Ensure correct orientation.
- Plug the battery charger into a power outlet. The charging indicator light will illuminate.
- Once charging is complete (indicator light changes or turns off), remove the battery.
A full charge typically takes approximately 2 hours.
2. Inserting the Battery and SD Card
Insert the charged battery and an SD/SDHC memory card into the camera.
- Open the battery/card compartment cover on the bottom of the camera.
- Insert the battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, pushing until it clicks into place.
- Insert the SD/SDHC memory card with the label facing the back of the camera, pushing until it clicks.
- Close the compartment cover securely.

3. Attaching the Wrist Strap
Attach the wrist strap to prevent accidental drops.
- Thread the thin loop of the wrist strap through the strap eyelet on the side of the camera.
- Pass the main strap through the loop and pull it tight.
4. Initial Settings
Upon first power-on, you may be prompted to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions using the camera's control buttons.
Operating the Camera
1. Powering On/Off
Press the ON/OFF button located on the top of the camera to power it on or off. The lens will extend when powered on.
2. Basic Photography (Intelligent Auto Mode)
For simple point-and-shoot operation, use the Intelligent Auto (iA) mode.
- Set the mode dial (usually on top) to the iA icon.
- Frame your shot using the LCD screen.
- Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The focus frame will turn green when focus is achieved.
- Press the shutter button fully down to take the picture.

3. Zoom Operation
Use the zoom lever, typically located around the shutter button, to adjust the optical zoom.
- Push the lever towards W (Wide) to zoom out.
- Push the lever towards T (Telephoto) to zoom in.
4. Changing Shooting Modes
The mode dial allows you to select various shooting modes:
- iA (Intelligent Auto): Camera automatically optimizes settings.
- Normal Picture: Standard shooting mode with more manual control options.
- Scene Modes: Pre-set modes for specific situations (e.g., Portrait, Macro, Sports, Night Portrait, Fireworks, Food). Select a scene mode and the camera will adjust settings accordingly.
- Movie Mode: For recording videos.
5. Recording Videos
To record a video:
- Set the mode dial to Movie Mode (camcorder icon).
- Press the shutter button to start recording.
- Press the shutter button again to stop recording.
Note: Optical zoom is available during video recording, but may operate slower to ensure smooth footage.
6. Playback Mode
To view your photos and videos:
- Press the Playback button (usually indicated by a triangle icon).
- Use the directional pad to navigate through your images and videos.
- Press the MENU/SET button to access playback options (e.g., delete, slideshow).
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Camera
- Lens: Use a soft, dry lens cloth to gently wipe the lens. Avoid touching the lens with your fingers.
- LCD Screen: Use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn smudges, a specialized LCD cleaning solution can be used sparingly.
- Camera Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use strong cleaning agents or solvents.
2. Battery Care
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures.
- Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.
- If the camera will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.
3. Storage
When storing the camera for long periods:
- Remove the battery and memory card.

Troubleshooting
Camera Does Not Power On
- Ensure the battery is fully charged.
- Check that the battery is inserted correctly.
- Try using a different, fully charged battery if available.
"Please turn camera off and then on again." Message
- This message often indicates an issue with the lens mechanism.
- Turn the camera off and then on again. If the problem persists, gently check for any obstructions around the lens.
- If the lens does not retract or extend properly, and the issue is not resolved by restarting, contact customer support.
Images Are Blurry
- Ensure the lens is clean.
- Make sure the camera is focusing correctly (press the shutter button halfway).
- In low light, use the flash or ensure the MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) is active.
- Hold the camera steady or use a tripod, especially in low light or with high zoom.
Memory Card Error
- Ensure the memory card is inserted correctly.
- Try formatting the memory card (Note: This will erase all data on the card. Back up important files first.).
- Try a different, compatible SD/SDHC memory card.
