1. Introduction

1.1 Product Overview

The SANYO U4-W33(L) is a portable radio double cassette recorder designed for playing and recording audio cassettes, as well as receiving AM/FM radio broadcasts. 2. Setup

2.1 Power Supply

The U4-W33(L) can be powered by AC power or batteries.

2.1.1 AC Power Connection

  1. Ensure the unit is turned off.
  2. Connect the AC power cord to the AC IN jack on the unit.
  3. Plug the other end of the AC power cord into a standard wall outlet.

2.1.2 Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom or rear of the unit.
  2. Insert the required number of batteries (e.g., C-size batteries, refer to the battery compartment for exact type and quantity) according to the polarity indicators (+ and -).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Note: Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Basic Controls

Familiarize yourself with the main controls:

  • Power Button: Turns the unit on or off.
  • Volume Control: Adjusts the audio output level.
  • Function Selector: Switches between Radio, Tape Playback, and other modes.
  • Tuning Dial: Selects radio frequencies.
  • Band Selector: Switches between AM and FM radio bands.

3.2 Radio Operation

  1. Turn on the unit using the Power button.
  2. Set the Function Selector to "RADIO".
  3. Select the desired band (AM or FM) using the Band Selector.
  4. Rotate the Tuning Dial to find your desired radio station. Extend the telescopic antenna for better FM reception. For AM, rotate the unit for optimal reception.
  5. Adjust the Volume Control to a comfortable listening level.

3.3 Cassette Playback

This unit features two cassette decks, Deck A and Deck B.

  1. Set the Function Selector to "TAPE".
  2. Press the "STOP/EJECT" button on the desired cassette deck (Deck A or Deck B) to open the cassette door.
  3. Insert a cassette tape with the exposed tape side facing upwards.
  4. Close the cassette door firmly.
  5. Press the "PLAY" button to start playback.
  6. Use "FAST FORWARD" (FF) or "REWIND" (REW) buttons to quickly navigate the tape.
  7. Press "STOP" to halt playback. Press "PAUSE" to temporarily stop playback.

3.4 Cassette Recording

You can record from the radio or using the built-in microphone.

3.4.1 Recording from Radio

  1. Insert a blank cassette tape into Deck B (typically the recording deck).
  2. Tune to the desired radio station as described in Section 3.2.
  3. Press the "RECORD" button (usually red) on Deck B. The "PLAY" button will also engage automatically. Recording will begin.
  4. Press "STOP" to end the recording.

3.4.2 Recording with Built-in Microphone

  1. Insert a blank cassette tape into Deck B.
  2. Set the Function Selector to "TAPE" or "MIC" (if available).
  3. Press the "RECORD" button on Deck B. The "PLAY" button will also engage.
  4. Speak or play audio towards the built-in microphone.
  5. Press "STOP" to end the recording.

3.5 Dubbing Function (Tape to Tape Copy)

The unit allows you to copy content from one cassette to another.

3.5.1 Sync Recording

  1. Insert the source tape (with content) into Deck A.
  2. Insert a blank tape into Deck B.
  3. Ensure the Function Selector is set to "TAPE".
  4. Press the "PLAY" button on Deck A.
  5. Immediately press the "RECORD" button on Deck B. Both decks will start simultaneously, copying the audio.
  6. Press "STOP" on both decks to end dubbing.

3.5.2 Normal/High-Speed Dubbing

  1. Follow steps 1-3 for Sync Recording.
  2. Select the desired dubbing speed (e.g., "NORMAL" or "HIGH SPEED") using the dedicated switch or button. High-speed dubbing copies the tape faster but may result in slightly lower audio quality.
  3. Press the "PLAY" button on Deck A and the "RECORD" button on Deck B simultaneously (or follow specific instructions for your model's dubbing button).
  4. Press "STOP" on both decks to end dubbing.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

  • Cassette Heads: Regularly clean the tape heads, pinch rollers, and capstans with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. This prevents sound degradation and tape damage.
  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

4.2 Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries to prevent leakage.
