Setup
1. Charging and Installing the Battery
- Insert the EN-EL10 rechargeable Li-ion battery into the battery charger.
- Plug the charger into a power outlet. The charging indicator will illuminate.
- Once charging is complete (indicator light changes or turns off), remove the battery.
- Open the battery chamber cover on the camera.
- Insert the charged battery into the camera, ensuring correct orientation. Close the cover securely.
2. Inserting a Memory Card
The camera uses SD/SDHC memory cards (not included).
- Open the memory card slot cover, usually located near the battery compartment.
- Insert the SD/SDHC memory card with the label facing the front of the camera until it clicks into place.
- Close the memory card slot cover.
3. Initial Settings (Date and Time)
Upon first power-on or after the battery has been removed for an extended period, you may be prompted to set the date and time. Follow the on-screen instructions using the touch panel LCD.
Operating the Camera
1. Powering On and Off
- To power on, press the ON/OFF button located on the top of the camera.
- To power off, press the ON/OFF button again.
2. Using the Touch Panel LCD

The 3.0-inch high-resolution touch-panel LCD allows for intuitive control of camera functions. Tap icons to select options, swipe to navigate menus or review images, and use pinch-to-zoom gestures in playback mode.
3. Taking Pictures (Auto Mode)
- Turn on the camera.
- Frame your shot using the LCD monitor.
- Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The focus indicator will appear.
- Press the shutter button fully down to take the picture.
4. Using Optical Zoom
The camera features a 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor glass lens.
- To zoom in, push the zoom control lever towards T (telephoto).
- To zoom out, push the zoom control lever towards W (wide-angle).
5. Image Stabilization
The Coolpix S230 incorporates 4-way VR Image Stabilization to reduce blur caused by camera shake and subject movement.
- Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction): Compensates for camera shake by adjusting shutter speed and ISO.

6. Smart Portrait System

- Smile Mode: The camera automatically releases the shutter when it detects a smile.
- Blink Proof: The camera takes two shots and saves the one where the subject's eyes are open.
- In-Camera Red-Eye Fix: Automatically corrects most instances of red-eye in captured images.
- Enhanced Face-Priority AF: Automatically detects and focuses on up to 12 faces in the frame, adjusting brightness for optimal exposure.
7. Scene Auto Selector
This feature automatically analyzes the scene and selects the most appropriate scene mode for optimal results. Simply compose your shot, and the camera will adjust settings accordingly.
8. D-Lighting
D-Lighting can be applied to rescue dark or backlit images by improving brightness and detail in underexposed areas.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Camera
- Camera Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the camera body. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water.
- Lens: Use a lens brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a lens cleaning cloth. Avoid touching the lens surface with your fingers.
