Olympus FE-5010 12MP Digital Camera User Manual

Model: FE-5010

Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of your Olympus FE-5010 12MP Digital Camera. Please read this manual thoroughly before using your camera to ensure proper operation and to maximize its features. The Olympus FE-5010 is a compact digital camera featuring a 12-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD screen, designed for ease of use and high-quality image capture.

Setup

1. Unpacking the Camera

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure the following items are present:

  • Olympus FE-5010 Digital Camera
  • Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery (LI-42B)
  • Battery Charger
  • USB Cable
  • Wrist Strap

2. Charging the Battery

Before initial use, fully charge the supplied LI-42B battery. Insert the battery into the charger and connect the charger to a power outlet. The charging indicator light will typically change color or turn off when charging is complete.

3. Inserting the Battery and Memory Card

Open the battery/card compartment cover located on the bottom of the camera. Insert the fully charged LI-42B battery according to the polarity indicators. Insert an xD-Picture Card or a microSD card (with MASD-1 adapter, if using microSD) into the designated slot until it clicks into place. Close the compartment cover securely.

4. Initial Power On and Settings

Press the ON/OFF button to power on the camera. The first time you power on, you may be prompted to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions using the directional buttons and OK/FUNC button.

Operating the Camera

1. Basic Shooting (Intelligent Auto Mode)

For simple point-and-shoot operation, set the camera to Intelligent Auto mode. In this mode, the camera automatically detects the scene (e.g., Portrait, Landscape, Macro) and adjusts settings for optimal results. Simply frame your shot and press the shutter button halfway to focus, then fully to capture the image.

2. Using Shooting Modes

The FE-5010 offers various pre-set shooting modes to suit different situations. Access these modes via the menu or a dedicated mode button (if available). Examples include:

  • Sports Mode: For capturing fast-moving subjects.
  • Night + Portrait Mode: Balances flash with ambient light for night portraits.
  • Macro Mode: For close-up photography of small subjects.
  • Smile Shot: Automatically captures three consecutive shots when a smile is detected.

3. Image Stabilization

The camera features Dual Image Stabilization, combining mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization with Digital Image Stabilization. This helps reduce blur caused by camera shake or subject movement, especially in low-light conditions or when using the zoom.

4. Advanced Face Detection

The Advanced Face Detection feature automatically identifies faces in the frame, optimizing focus and exposure for sharp, well-exposed portraits. It can detect up to 16 individual faces simultaneously.

5. Video Recording

To record videos, switch to video mode (usually indicated by a movie camera icon). The FE-5010 records VGA-quality video with sound. Press the shutter button to start and stop recording.

6. In-Camera Editing (Perfect Fix)

After capturing an image, you can perform basic edits directly on the camera. Options typically include Red-Eye Fix, Lighting Fix, resizing, and cropping. Access these features through the playback menu.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a lens brush to gently remove dust. For smudges, use a specialized lens cleaning solution applied to a cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • LCD Screen: Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid pressing too hard.
  • Camera Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away dust and fingerprints. Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents.

2. Battery Care

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
  • Do not expose batteries to extreme temperatures.

3. Storage

When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag or case to protect it from impacts and moisture.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Olympus FE-5010 camera.

Camera Does Not Power On

  • Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted.
  • Check that the battery compartment cover is securely closed.

"Card Cover Open" Error

  • Verify that the memory card compartment cover is fully closed and latched. Sometimes a slight adjustment or re-closing is needed.

Blurry Photos

  • Ensure the camera is held steady. Use Image Stabilization or a tripod if necessary.
  • Check lighting conditions; insufficient light can lead to slower shutter speeds and blur.
  • Confirm the camera has focused correctly before fully pressing the shutter button.

Slow Shutter Response

  • In low light, the camera may use a slower shutter speed. Consider increasing ISO sensitivity (if available in your mode) or using the flash.
  • Ensure there is sufficient light for the autofocus system to lock onto the subject quickly.

Images Not Saving

  • Check if the memory card is inserted correctly and not full.
  • Ensure the memory card is not write-protected.
  • Try formatting the memory card (note: this will erase all data).
