1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your GE FXHSC Whole House Water Filter. The GE Whole Home System Replacement Filter is designed to reduce more than five contaminants in your water, including chlorine and sand. It is compatible with GXWH40L, GXWH30C, GXWH35F, GXWH38F, GNQH38S systems and most systems with 10" x 4.5" filters. For optimal performance, it is recommended to replace the filter every three months or 24,000 gallons. This product is NSF/ANSI certified.

2. Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure you have all necessary tools and components. It is recommended to consult a qualified plumber if you are unsure about any steps. Always turn off the main water supply before working on your water filtration system.

2.1 Initial Installation (New System)

1. Choose Location: Select a suitable location for the whole house water filter, typically where the main water line enters your home. Ensure there is enough space for maintenance and filter replacement.
2. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate and turn off the main water supply valve to your home. Open a faucet at the lowest point in your house to drain the water from the pipes and relieve pressure.
3. Cut Pipe: Carefully cut the main water line where the filter is to be installed. Ensure cuts are clean and straight.
4. Install Shut-off Valves (Recommended): Install shut-off valves on both sides of the filter housing for easier future maintenance.
5. Assemble Filter Housing: Connect the filter housing to the cut water lines using appropriate fittings and sealants (e.g., PTFE tape). Ensure all connections are secure and watertight.
6. Insert Filter Cartridge: Unwrap the new GE FXHSC filter cartridge. Insert it into the filter housing, ensuring it is properly seated.
7. Secure Housing: Screw the filter housing bowl onto the filter head. Hand-tighten, then use a filter wrench for a snug fit, but do not overtighten.
8. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for leaks. Once the system is pressurized, open a nearby faucet to purge air from the lines until water flows smoothly.

3. Operating Instructions

The GE FXHSC Whole House Water Filter operates continuously once installed and the water supply is restored. Water flows through the pleated paper filter, which traps sediment, sand, and rust particles before the water reaches your household plumbing and appliances. There are no active controls or settings required for daily operation.

The filter is designed for high flow rates, ensuring minimal impact on water pressure throughout your home. Regular maintenance, specifically filter replacement, is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and water quality.

4. Maintenance and Filter Replacement

For best filtration results, the GE FXHSC filter should be replaced every three months or after filtering 24,000 gallons of water, whichever comes first. Actual filter life may vary based on water quality and usage.

4.1 Filter Replacement Procedure

1. Turn Off Water Supply: Turn off the main water supply valve to your home.
2. Relieve Pressure: Open a nearby faucet to relieve pressure in the system. If your filter housing has a pressure release button, press it to release any remaining pressure.
3. Unscrew Housing: Place a bucket or towel underneath the filter housing to catch any residual water. Use the provided filter wrench to unscrew the filter housing bowl. Turn counter-clockwise to loosen.
4. Remove Old Filter: Carefully remove the old filter cartridge and dispose of it properly.
5. Clean Housing: Clean the inside of the filter housing bowl with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Inspect the O-ring for any damage; replace if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring with a thin layer of food-grade silicone grease or petroleum jelly to ensure a good seal.
6. Insert New Filter: Unwrap a new GE FXHSC filter cartridge. Insert it into the clean filter housing, ensuring it is properly seated on the center standpipe.
7. Secure Housing: Screw the filter housing bowl back onto the filter head. Hand-tighten, then use the filter wrench for a snug fit. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the housing or O-ring.
8. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for leaks around the filter housing. Once the system is pressurized, open a nearby faucet to purge air from the lines until water flows smoothly and clearly.
