Stens 120-434 Oil Alert Sensor

For Honda GX Series Engines

1. Product Overview

The Stens 120-434 Oil Alert Sensor is a critical component designed to monitor the oil level in compatible Honda GX series engines. This sensor provides an alert signal, typically to an indicator light or engine shutdown system, when the engine oil level drops below a safe operating threshold. This helps prevent engine damage due to insufficient lubrication.

This sensor is a direct replacement for Honda part numbers 34150-ZH7-003, 34150-ZH7-013, and 34150-ZH7-023.

2. Safety Information

WARNING:

  • Always disconnect the spark plug wire or battery before performing any maintenance or installation on the engine to prevent accidental starting.
  • Allow the engine to cool completely before handling any components to avoid burns.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and eye protection, during installation.
  • Refer to your engine's specific service manual for detailed instructions and safety precautions.
  • This product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

3. Compatible Engine Models

The Stens 120-434 Oil Alert Sensor is compatible with the following Honda GX series engine models:

  • Honda GX120
  • Honda GX160
  • Honda GX200
  • Honda GX240
  • Honda GX270
  • Honda GX340
  • Honda GX390

Ensure your engine model is listed above before proceeding with installation.

4. Setup and Installation

Installation of the oil alert sensor typically involves replacing the existing sensor. Consult your engine's service manual for the exact location and procedure for your specific model. The following steps are general guidelines:

  1. Preparation: Ensure the engine is off and cool. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting. If applicable, drain the engine oil to prevent spills during sensor removal.
  2. Locate Sensor: Identify the current oil alert sensor on your engine. It is usually located near the crankcase or oil pan.
  3. Disconnect Wiring: Carefully disconnect the electrical wiring connected to the old sensor. Note the orientation of the wires if they are not color-coded or if there are multiple connections. The Stens 120-434 sensor has yellow and black wires.
  4. Remove Old Sensor: Use an appropriate wrench or socket to unscrew and remove the old oil alert sensor. Be prepared for any residual oil to leak out.
  5. Install New Sensor: Apply a small amount of thread sealant (if recommended by your engine manual) to the threads of the new Stens 120-434 sensor. Carefully thread the new sensor into place by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  6. Tighten Sensor: Tighten the sensor to the torque specifications provided in your engine's service manual. Do not overtighten.
  7. Connect Wiring: Reconnect the electrical wiring to the new sensor. Ensure connections are secure.
  8. Refill Oil: If oil was drained, refill the engine with the correct type and amount of engine oil as specified by your engine manufacturer. Check the oil level using the dipstick.
  9. Final Check: Reconnect the spark plug wire. Start the engine and check for any oil leaks around the sensor. Observe the oil alert indicator to ensure it functions correctly (it should turn off if oil level is adequate).

5. Operating Instructions

The Stens 120-434 Oil Alert Sensor operates automatically. Once installed and connected, it continuously monitors the engine's oil level. If the oil level drops below the safe operating range, the sensor will trigger an alert. Depending on your engine's configuration, this alert may manifest as:

  • An illuminated oil warning light on the engine or equipment control panel.
  • An audible alarm.
  • Automatic engine shutdown to prevent damage.

Upon receiving an oil alert, immediately shut down the engine and check the oil level. Add oil as necessary before restarting the engine. Do not operate the engine with an active oil alert.

6. Maintenance

The oil alert sensor itself typically requires minimal maintenance. However, regular engine maintenance is crucial to ensure the sensor functions correctly and to prolong its lifespan:

  • Regular Oil Changes: Follow your engine manufacturer's recommendations for oil change intervals and use the specified type of oil.
  • Check Oil Level: Routinely check the engine oil level before each use or as recommended by your engine manual.
  • Keep Sensor Clean: Ensure the area around the sensor is free from excessive dirt, debris, or oil buildup that could interfere with its operation or cause corrosion.
  • Inspect Wiring: Periodically inspect the sensor's wiring for any signs of wear, fraying, or loose connections.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your oil alert sensor or engine oil system, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Oil alert light stays on (or engine shuts down) despite adequate oil level.
  • Faulty oil alert sensor.
  • Wiring issue (loose connection, damaged wire).
  • Engine oil pressure issue (less common for alert sensor).
  • Other internal engine issues.
  • Verify oil level is correct.
  • Check sensor wiring for secure connections and damage.
  • If sensor is new and problem persists, the issue may lie elsewhere in the engine. Consult a qualified technician.
No oil alert when oil level is low.
  • Faulty oil alert sensor.
  • Wiring issue (disconnected, damaged wire).
  • Faulty indicator light or engine shutdown system.
  • Check sensor wiring.
  • Test the sensor if possible (refer to engine service manual).
  • Inspect the indicator light or engine shutdown system.
  • Replace sensor if determined to be faulty.

Note: If replacing the sensor does not resolve the issue, the problem may stem from other engine components. Professional diagnosis is recommended for complex issues.
