Setup and Installation

Safety First: Before beginning installation, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts and damage.

  1. Identify Wires: Match the colored wires of the Metra 70-1783 harness to the corresponding wires on your aftermarket radio's wiring harness. Each wire on the Metra harness is typically labeled with its function (e.g., "Left Front Speaker Positive").
  2. Connect Wires: Securely connect the wires using appropriate methods such as crimp connectors, solder, or heat shrink butt connectors. Ensure all connections are insulated to prevent short circuits. Common wire color codes are:
    • Yellow: Constant 12V (Battery)
    • Red: Switched 12V (Accessory/Ignition)
    • Black: Ground
    • Blue: Power Antenna/Remote Turn-On
    • Orange/White: Illumination/Dimmer
    • Speaker Wires (e.g., White/White-Black for Front Left, Gray/Gray-Black for Front Right, Green/Green-Black for Rear Left, Purple/Purple-Black for Rear Right)
  3. Plug into Vehicle: Once all connections between the Metra harness and the aftermarket radio harness are complete, plug the vehicle-specific connector of the Metra harness into the corresponding factory harness in your vehicle's dashboard.
  4. Test Functionality: Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal. Turn on the vehicle and test the aftermarket radio's functionality, including power, audio output from all speakers, and any other features.
  5. Secure Installation: Carefully tuck all wires and components into the dashboard cavity and secure the aftermarket radio into its mounting location.

Operating Instructions

The Metra 70-1783 wiring harness facilitates the electrical connection between your vehicle and an aftermarket radio. Its operation is passive; it simply transmits power and audio signals. Refer to your aftermarket radio's user manual for specific operating instructions related to its features and functions.

Maintenance

The Metra 70-1783 wiring harness requires no routine maintenance. Ensure that all connections remain secure and free from moisture or excessive vibration. If the radio experiences intermittent power or audio issues, inspect the harness connections for looseness or corrosion.

Troubleshooting

  • Radio Not Powering On:
    • Check the vehicle's fuse box for blown fuses related to the radio or accessory power.
    • Verify that the yellow (constant 12V) and red (switched 12V) wires are correctly connected and receiving power. Use a multimeter to test for voltage.
    • Ensure the black (ground) wire has a secure connection to the vehicle's chassis.
  • No Audio from Speakers:
    • Confirm that all speaker wires (e.g., white, gray, green, purple and their striped counterparts) are correctly matched and securely connected to the aftermarket radio's speaker outputs.
    • Check the radio's fader and balance settings.
    • Ensure the amplifier remote turn-on wire (if applicable, usually blue or blue/white) is connected to the aftermarket radio's remote output.
  • Intermittent Power/Audio:
    • Inspect all wire connections for looseness or poor contact. Re-crimp or re-solder as necessary.
    • Check for any pinched or damaged wires.
  • Specific Smart Car Models (2011+ 451):
    • Some Smart Car models (e.g., 2011+ Fortwo 451) may require modification of the red (switched 12V) wire's pin location within the harness connector. The red wire might need to be moved to a different slot to align with the vehicle's factory wiring. Refer to online resources or vehicle-specific wiring diagrams for precise pin-out information.
    • Other wires like illumination might also need adjustment depending on the head unit.
