2. Setup and Installation

2.1. Before You Begin

  • Ensure you have a static-free environment. Use an anti-static wrist strap or frequently touch a grounded metal object.
  • Gather all necessary components: Intel DX58SO motherboard, compatible Intel Core i7 processor (LGA1366), DDR3 memory modules, power supply, graphics card(s), storage devices, and a compatible ATX case.
  • Refer to your case manual for specific mounting instructions.

2.2. Motherboard Installation

  1. Prepare the Case: Install the I/O shield into the rear opening of your computer case.
  2. Install Standoffs: Securely install the appropriate standoffs in your case that align with the screw holes on the motherboard.
  3. Mount the Motherboard: Carefully place the motherboard onto the standoffs, ensuring the I/O ports align with the I/O shield. Secure the motherboard with screws.
  4. Install CPU: Open the CPU socket lever. Align the triangular mark on the Intel Core i7 processor with the mark on the LGA1366 socket. Gently place the CPU into the socket. Close the lever to secure the CPU.
  5. Install CPU Cooler: Apply thermal paste (if not pre-applied) and install the CPU cooler according to its manufacturer's instructions. Connect the CPU fan cable to the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard.
  6. Install Memory: Open the clips on the DDR3 DIMM slots. Align the notch on the memory module with the key in the slot. Press firmly on both ends of the module until the clips snap into place. For triple-channel operation, install modules in matching colored slots (e.g., blue slots).

2.3. Component Connections

  • Power Connections: Connect the 24-pin ATX main power connector and the 4-pin or 8-pin ATX 12V power connector from your power supply to the corresponding headers on the motherboard. Ensure both are securely seated to prevent damage.
  • Graphics Card(s): Insert your PCI Express graphics card(s) into the PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. For SLI or CrossFireX, install multiple cards as per their respective guidelines and connect the necessary bridge.
  • Storage Devices: Connect your SATA hard drives and optical drives to the SATA 3.0 Gbit/s ports using SATA data cables. Connect power from your power supply to these devices.
  • Front Panel Connectors: Connect the power button, reset button, HDD LED, power LED, and front panel USB/audio headers from your case to the corresponding pins on the motherboard. Refer to the motherboard's silkscreen labels for correct orientation.
  • Peripheral Connections: Connect any additional USB devices, IEEE-1394a devices, or audio peripherals to the available ports.

3. Operating Your System

3.1. BIOS Configuration

Upon first boot, you may need to enter the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) to configure settings. Typically, you can access the BIOS by pressing the DEL or F2 key during startup. In the BIOS, you can set boot order, adjust system time, and configure various hardware parameters.

3.2. Intel Desktop Control Center

The Intel Desktop Control Center is a utility designed to help you optimize and monitor your system's performance. It allows for automatic tuning of processor, memory, and bus speeds for stability and performance. You can also monitor system temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds. Install this software from the Intel support website or the included driver disc for full functionality.

3.3. Multi-GPU Setup (SLI/CrossFireX)

To utilize the multi-GPU capabilities (NVIDIA SLI or ATI CrossFireX), ensure your graphics cards are properly installed and connected with the appropriate bridge. Install the latest drivers for your graphics cards from the manufacturer's website. The graphics driver software will typically provide options to enable and configure the multi-GPU mode.

4. Maintenance and Care

  • Dust Removal: Regularly clean dust from inside your computer case, especially from heatsinks and fans, using compressed air. Dust accumulation can lead to overheating and reduced performance.
  • BIOS Updates: Periodically check the Intel support website for BIOS updates. BIOS updates can improve system stability, add support for new hardware, or fix known issues. Follow Intel's instructions carefully when updating the BIOS.
  • Driver Updates: Keep your system drivers (chipset, audio, network, graphics) updated to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.
  • Physical Handling: When handling the motherboard or other components, always use proper anti-static precautions to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage.

5. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • No Power/No Boot:
    • Ensure all power cables (24-pin ATX, 4/8-pin 12V CPU) are securely connected to the motherboard and power supply.
    • Verify the power supply is switched on and functioning correctly.
    • Check front panel power button connection to the motherboard.
  • No Video Output:
    • Ensure the graphics card is properly seated in its PCIe slot and has adequate power connected.
    • Verify the monitor cable is securely connected to the graphics card and the monitor.
    • Test with a different monitor or graphics card if possible.
  • System Instability/Crashes:
    • Check CPU and memory temperatures using monitoring software. Ensure adequate cooling.
    • Verify memory modules are correctly installed and functioning. Run a memory diagnostic tool.
    • Ensure all drivers are up to date.
    • If overclocking, revert to default settings to check for stability.
  • Component Not Recognized (e.g., HDD, RAM):
    • Reseat the component.
    • Check data and power cable connections.
    • Verify BIOS settings for component detection.
  • BIOS Reset: If system becomes unbootable due to incorrect BIOS settings, locate the CMOS clear jumper on the motherboard (refer to the motherboard diagram) or remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes to reset BIOS to default settings.
