Introduction

The HM Digital DM-1 is a dual in-line monitor designed to measure Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in water, with a range of 0 to 9990 parts per million (ppm) and an accuracy of +/- 2%. This device is ideal for monitoring water quality in various filtration and purification systems, including Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Deionization (DI) systems. It allows users to easily compare the TDS levels of incoming tap water with the purified product water, providing valuable insight into the efficiency and performance of their filtration system.

Setup and Installation

1. Unpack the Device: Carefully remove the DM-1 monitor, sensors, and T-fittings from the packaging.
2. Battery Installation: The DM-1 monitor requires 2 LR44 batteries, which are included. Ensure they are correctly inserted into the battery compartment.
3. Identify Water Lines: Locate the incoming tap water line (before your filtration system) and the purified product water line (after your filtration system).
4. Install 'IN' Sensor: Cut the incoming tap water line at a suitable point. Insert one of the 1/4" quick-connect T-fittings into the cut line. Connect the 'IN' sensor probe (typically marked with a red wire) to this T-fitting.
5. Install 'OUT' Sensor: Cut the purified product water line. Insert the second 1/4" quick-connect T-fitting into this line. Connect the 'OUT' sensor probe (typically marked with a blue wire) to this T-fitting.
6. Secure Connections: Ensure all quick-connect fittings are securely attached to prevent leaks. Some fittings may benefit from small blue plastic clips (not always included) to further secure the tubing against high pressure.
7. Mount the Monitor: Use the included Velcro or other suitable means to mount the DM-1 monitor in a convenient and visible location.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off: Press the 'ON/OFF' button located on the top right of the monitor to turn the device on or off. A blue indicator light will illuminate when the device is on.
2. Select Reading: Use the 'IN/OUT' selector switch at the bottom of the monitor to toggle between displaying the TDS reading for the incoming (IN) water and the outgoing (OUT) purified water.
3. Read TDS Levels: The digital display will show the TDS level in parts per million (ppm) for the selected water line.
4. Interpret Readings: For most RO/DI systems, a low TDS reading (ideally close to 0-25 ppm) for the 'OUT' water indicates efficient filtration. A significantly higher 'OUT' reading compared to the system's expected performance suggests that maintenance may be required.

Maintenance

• Filter Replacement: The primary maintenance task for water filtration systems is replacing the filter cartridges and RO membrane. Your DM-1 monitor provides crucial data to determine when these components need replacement.
• Monitoring Efficiency: If the 'OUT' TDS reading begins to rise significantly, it indicates that your filters or membrane are becoming saturated and are no longer effectively removing dissolved solids. This is the primary indicator for replacement.
• Battery Replacement: If the display becomes dim or unresponsive, replace the 2 LR44 batteries.

Troubleshooting

• Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the sensors are correctly installed in the 'IN' and 'OUT' lines and that the selector switch is in the desired position.
• No Display/Dim Display: Check and replace the LR44 batteries if necessary.
• Leaks at Connections: Verify that all quick-connect T-fittings are fully inserted and secured. If available, use blue plastic clips to reinforce connections, especially in high-pressure systems.
• Broken Wires: Inspect the sensor wires for any damage. If a wire is broken at the connection point, the unit may need to be replaced or professionally repaired.
