2. Setup and Initial Use

Your Zippo lighter is shipped without fuel for safety reasons. It must be filled with Zippo premium lighter fluid before first use.

2.1 Filling with Lighter Fluid

  1. Remove the inner unit from the lighter case.
  2. Lift the felt pad on the bottom of the inner unit to expose the packing material.
  3. Slowly saturate the packing material with Zippo premium lighter fluid. Do not overfill. Stop filling when the fluid reaches the top of the packing, or when you see the fluid begin to change color.
  4. Insert the inner unit back into the lighter case.
  5. Wipe any excess fluid from the lighter and your hands before igniting.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Igniting the Lighter

  1. Open the lighter lid.
  2. Spin the flint wheel downwards with your thumb to create a spark. The wick will ignite, producing a flame.

3.2 Extinguishing the Flame

To extinguish the flame, simply close the lighter lid. The lid will cut off the oxygen supply, causing the flame to go out. Do not blow out the flame, as this can damage the wick.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your Zippo lighter.

4.1 Refilling Lighter Fluid

Refill the lighter fluid as described in Section 2.1 when the flame becomes weak or fails to ignite consistently. For optimum performance, use genuine Zippo premium lighter fluid.

4.2 Replacing the Flint

If the lighter produces sparks but no flame, or if the flint wheel spins freely without producing sparks, the flint may need replacement.

  1. Remove the inner unit from the lighter case.
  2. Unscrew the flint spring from the bottom of the inner unit.
  3. Carefully remove the old flint and insert a new Zippo flint into the flint tube.
  4. Replace the flint spring and tighten it securely.

4.3 Replacing the Wick

The wick should be replaced if it becomes discolored, frayed, or too short to reach the fluid. This is typically less frequent than flint replacement.

  1. Remove the inner unit and all packing material.
  2. Pull the old wick out through the top of the chimney.
  3. Thread a new Zippo wick through the chimney hole from the inside out.
  4. Weave the wick through the packing material in a serpentine pattern to ensure good fluid absorption.
  5. Trim the wick even with the top of the chimney.
  6. Replace the packing material and felt pad.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Lighter does not light: Ensure the lighter is filled with Zippo premium lighter fluid. Check if the flint needs replacement.
  • Weak or inconsistent flame: The lighter may need refilling with fluid, or the wick might be worn and require trimming or replacement.
  • No spark: The flint needs to be replaced.
  • Fuel evaporates quickly: Ensure the lighter lid is fully closed when not in use to minimize fuel evaporation.
