1. Introduction

The Nikon Coolpix P6000 is a compact digital camera designed for high-quality photography with advanced control options. It features a 13.5-megapixel sensor, a 4x wide-angle optical Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens, and optical Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization. This manual provides essential information for operating and maintaining your camera.

2. What's in the Box

Upon unboxing your Nikon Coolpix P6000, please ensure all the following items are present:

  • Nikon Coolpix P6000 Digital Camera Body
  • Instruction Manual
  • USB Cord (for camera to computer connection)

Note: SD/SDHC cards and batteries are not included and must be purchased separately.

4. Setup

4.1. Inserting Batteries

  1. Open the battery chamber cover located on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the EN-EL5 Lithium-Ion battery (sold separately) according to the polarity indicators (+/-).
  3. Close the battery chamber cover securely.

4.2. Inserting a Memory Card

  1. Open the memory card slot cover, usually located on the side or bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert an SD or SDHC memory card (sold separately) into the slot until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is oriented correctly.
  3. Close the memory card slot cover.

4.3. Initial Settings

Upon first power-on, the camera may prompt you to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure these basic settings.

5. Operating the Camera

5.1. Power On/Off

Press the power button located on the top of the camera to turn it on or off.

5.2. Shooting Modes

Rotate the mode dial to select your desired shooting mode:

  • Auto: For simple point-and-shoot operation.
  • Program (P): Camera sets aperture and shutter speed for optimal exposure.
  • Shutter-Priority (S): You control shutter speed, camera sets aperture.
  • Aperture-Priority (A): You control aperture, camera sets shutter speed.
  • Manual (M): You control both aperture and shutter speed.
  • Scene Modes: Pre-set modes for specific shooting conditions (e.g., Portrait, Landscape).

5.3. Zoom Operation

Use the zoom lever around the shutter button to adjust the optical zoom. Push it towards 'W' for wide-angle and 'T' for telephoto.

5.4. Flash Settings

The built-in flash can be configured using the flash mode button. Options include Auto, On/Fill, and Off.

5.5. Focusing

The camera supports Contrast Detection, Live View, and Single Autofocus (AF-S). Manual Focus (MF) is also available for precise control.

6. Connectivity

6.1. USB Connection

Connect the camera to a computer using the provided USB cord to transfer images and videos. The camera will appear as a removable disk drive.

6.2. Wired LAN

The Coolpix P6000 features a Wired LAN port, allowing direct upload of pictures to Nikon's my Picturetown photo storage and sharing service. Connect an Ethernet cable to the camera for automatic uploads.

6.3. GPS Geo-tagging

The integrated GPS capability automatically tags your pictures with the exact location where they were taken. This feature can be enabled or disabled in the camera's settings menu.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body.
  • For the lens, use a lens brush or a blower to remove dust, then gently wipe with a lens cleaning cloth and solution if necessary.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

7.2. Battery Care

  • Charge the battery fully before first use and after extended periods of non-use.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
  • Remove the battery from the camera if it will not be used for a long time.

7.3. Storage

Store the camera in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humidity. Use a camera bag for protection during transport.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Camera does not power on: Check if the battery is charged and correctly inserted.
  • Images are blurry: Ensure the lens is clean, the camera is stable, and the focus is correctly set. Check for sufficient lighting.
  • Flash not firing: Verify flash mode settings. Ensure the flash is not obstructed.
  • Memory card error: Reinsert the memory card. If the issue persists, try a different card or format the current card (note: formatting will erase all data).
  • GPS not acquiring signal: Ensure you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky. GPS signal acquisition may take some time.
