Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the safe and effective use of your OM SYSTEM OLYMPUS FE360 8MP Digital Camera. The FE360 is a compact digital camera designed for ease of use, featuring an 8-megapixel CCD sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens. Please read this manual thoroughly before using your camera and keep it for future reference.

Setup

1. Unpacking

Verify that all components are present in the package:

  • Li-ion Rechargeable Battery

  • Wrist Strap

2. Battery Installation and Charging

The camera operates using a Li-ion rechargeable battery. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the Li-ion battery with the correct orientation, matching the indicators inside the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.
  4. Connect the camera to a power source using the provided USB cable to charge the battery. The charging indicator will illuminate.

3. Memory Card Installation

The camera supports xD-Picture Cards (1GB, 2GB) and can use a microSDHC memory card with an appropriate adapter. The camera has 20.5MB of internal memory for temporary storage.

  1. Open the memory card slot cover, usually adjacent to the battery compartment.
  2. Insert the xD-Picture Card or microSDHC card (with adapter) into the slot until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is oriented correctly.
  3. Close the memory card slot cover securely.

Operating the Camera

1. Power On/Off

Press the POWER button located on the top of the camera to turn it on or off. The lens will extend when powered on.

2. Basic Controls

Familiarize yourself with the camera's rear controls:

  • Shutter Button: Press halfway to focus, fully to take a picture.
  • Zoom Lever (W/T): Use 'W' for wide-angle and 'T' for telephoto zoom.
  • DISP. Button: Changes the information displayed on the LCD screen.
  • OK/FUNC Button: Confirms selections and accesses the Function menu for quick settings.
  • MENU Button: Accesses the main camera menu for detailed settings.
  • Playback Button: Switches to playback mode to view captured images and videos.
  • Directional Pad: Navigates menus and selects options.

3. Taking Photos

  1. Turn on the camera.
  2. Frame your shot using the LCD monitor.
  3. Use the zoom lever to adjust the focal length.
  4. Press the shutter button halfway down to allow the camera to focus. The focus indicator will illuminate.
  5. Press the shutter button fully to capture the image.

4. Shooting Modes

The FE360 offers 20 shooting modes to optimize settings for various scenes. These include:

  • Portrait
  • Sunset
  • Night Scene
  • Landscape
  • Underwater
  • And more.

Access these modes through the camera's menu system to select the appropriate setting for your environment.

5. Special Features

  • Face Detection: Automatically tracks faces in the frame, optimizing focus and exposure for sharp portraits.
  • Digital Image Stabilization: Helps reduce blur caused by camera shake.
  • Self-Timer: Set a 12-second delay before the shutter fires, useful for self-portraits or group shots.
  • Panorama: Capture wide panoramic scenes. Up to 10 frames can be automatically stitched together using OLYMPUS Master software when using an Olympus brand xD-Picture Card.
  • In-camera Help Guides: Provides brief descriptions of camera settings and features directly on the LCD.
  • My Favorites: An in-camera album to store and easily share your preferred images.

6. Video Recording

The camera can record AVI Motion JPEG videos with sound.

  • Supported resolutions: 640x480 and 320x240.
  • To start recording, select the movie mode from the shooting modes and press the shutter button.
  • Press the shutter button again to stop recording.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for camera lenses. Avoid touching the lens with your fingers.
  • LCD Screen: Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Camera Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water.

2. Battery Care

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
  • Do not expose batteries to extreme temperatures.

3. Storage

When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag or case.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your camera, refer to the in-camera help guides or the following common solutions:

Problem Solution
Camera does not power on. Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Try removing and reinserting the battery.
Images are blurry or out of focus. Ensure you press the shutter button halfway to allow the camera to focus before fully pressing. Use Digital Image Stabilization in low light. Check lens for smudges.
LCD screen is blank or not displaying correctly. Press the DISP. button to cycle through display options. Power cycle the camera. If the issue persists, contact support.
Battery drains quickly. Reduce LCD brightness. Limit continuous playback. Ensure battery is fully charged before use. Consider replacing an aging battery.
Camera operates slowly. Ensure you are using a compatible and sufficiently fast memory card. Some operations, like writing large files, may take time.
