2. Setup and Installation
2.1 Connections
The CAT-300 features SO-239 connectors for easy integration into your radio system. Ensure all connections are secure to prevent signal loss and maintain optimal performance.
- Transceiver Connection: Connect your transceiver's antenna output to the INPUT SO-239 connector on the rear panel of the CAT-300.
- Antenna Connection: Connect your antenna's feedline to either the ANT 1 or ANT 2 SO-239 connectors. For wire antennas, use the dedicated WIRE ANT. terminal.
- Ground Connection: Connect a reliable ground wire to the GND terminal for safety and optimal performance.
- Power Connection: The unit requires a 13.8V DC power supply. Connect the power cable to the DC 13.8V input. This powers the meter lamp.

2.2 Initial Power-Up
After making all necessary connections, ensure the power supply is connected and switched on. The meter lamp can be activated for improved visibility in low-light conditions.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Controls and Indicators
- TR TUNE Knob: Adjusts the tuning for the transmitter side.
- X TUNE Knob: Adjusts the tuning for the antenna side.
- BAND Switch: Selects the operating frequency band (e.g., 1.8, 3.5, 7, 10, 14, 18, 21, 24, 28, 50 MHz).
- POWER RANGE Switch: Selects the power meter range (30W or 300W).
- ON TUNER OFF Switch: Engages or bypasses the tuner circuit.
- LAMP Switch: Turns the meter illumination on or off.
- Cross-Needle Meter: Displays Forward Power (FWD), Reflected Power (REF), and Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) simultaneously.
3.2 Tuning Procedure
The goal of tuning is to achieve the lowest possible SWR, ideally 1.5:1 or lower, to ensure maximum power transfer to the antenna and protect your transceiver.
- Set your transceiver to a low power output (e.g., 5-10 watts) in CW (Continuous Wave) or AM (Amplitude Modulation) mode.
- Select the desired operating band using the BAND switch on the CAT-300.
- Set the POWER RANGE switch to an appropriate setting (e.g., 30W for low power tuning).
- Ensure the ON TUNER OFF switch is in the ON position.
- Key your transceiver (transmit a continuous signal).
- While transmitting, slowly adjust the TR TUNE and X TUNE knobs alternately to minimize the reflected power (REF needle) and the SWR reading on the cross-needle meter. Aim for the lowest possible SWR.
- Once the SWR is minimized, unkey your transceiver.
- You can now increase your transceiver's power output to your desired level. Re-check SWR at higher power; minor adjustments may be needed.
3.3 Using the Cross-Needle Meter
The cross-needle meter provides a visual representation of your antenna system's performance. The intersection of the FWD and REF needles indicates the SWR. A lower SWR reading (closer to 1:1) signifies a better match and more efficient power transfer.

4. Maintenance

- Connections: Periodically check all coaxial and ground connections for tightness and corrosion.

5. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your CAT-300, consider the following troubleshooting steps:
- High SWR Readings:
- Double-check all coaxial cable connections between the transceiver, tuner, and antenna.
- Ensure the antenna is appropriate for the selected frequency band.
- Verify that the ground connection is secure and effective.
- Attempt the tuning procedure again, making small, careful adjustments to the TR TUNE and X TUNE knobs.
- No Meter Illumination:
- Ensure the 13.8V DC power supply is connected and functioning correctly.
- Check the LAMP switch position.
- No Tuning Effect:
- Confirm the ON TUNER OFF switch is in the ON position.
- Ensure the antenna is properly connected to the ANT 1 or ANT 2 terminals, or the WIRE ANT. terminal for wire antennas.
