This transformer includes easy-connect terminal blocks, an on/off/auto switch, and an on/off switch for versatile control. It also incorporates auto-resettable in-line primary overload protection, a thermal cut-off on the primary side, and a thermal reset breaker on the secondary side for enhanced safety and reliability.
Key features include:
- EL core and coil configuration
- Integral timer and photocell for automated operation
- Black material finish (not painted)
- Constructed of steel for durability
- Includes a three-foot, 3-wire 12-3 SJTW cord
Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. This transformer is designed for ceiling mount applications and uses a plug-in format. Consider the total wattage required and the length of wire runs when planning your lighting layout. Voltage drop can reduce lamp brightness over longer distances, so keeping wire runs as short as possible is recommended.

Calculating Voltage Drop
To minimize voltage drop and maximize light output, use the following equation:
A (length of wire) x B (total watts for all lamps on that wire run) = C (cable constant)
Cable constants for common wire gauges:
- 10 gauge: 11920
- 12 gauge: 7500 (maximum 250 watts or 200 feet)
- 14 gauge: 3500 (maximum 200 watts or 150 feet)
- 16 gauge: 2200 (maximum 150 watts or 100 feet)
- 18 gauge: 1380
Ensure all connections are secure and follow local electrical codes.
Operating Instructions
The transformer features an integral timer and photocell for automated control of your lighting system. The control panel allows you to select between different operating modes.

Figure 2: Front view of the Kichler 60W Transformer, highlighting the control panel with the on/off/auto switch, timer dial, and photocell. The clear cover protects the controls from environmental elements.
Control Settings:
- ON: Provides continuous power to the lighting system.
- OFF: Disables power to the lighting system.
- AUTO: Activates the photocell and timer functions. The photocell detects ambient light, turning the lights on at dusk. The timer then controls how long the lights remain on (e.g., 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, or until dawn). Adjust the timer dial to your desired duration.
Ensure the clear protective cover is closed after adjusting settings to protect the controls from moisture and debris.
Maintenance
The Kichler 60W Transformer is designed for minimal maintenance. Its epoxy encapsulation provides enhanced protection and performance. The unit includes secondary protection and auto-reset circuit breakers, which contribute to its long-term reliability.
- Periodically inspect the transformer and wiring for any visible damage or wear.
- Keep the photocell clear of obstructions to ensure accurate dusk-to-dawn operation.
- Clean the exterior with a soft, damp cloth as needed. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Troubleshooting
If your lighting system is not functioning as expected, consider the following:
- No Power: Check the main power supply to the transformer. The unit has an auto-resettable in-line primary overload protection and a thermal cut-off on the primary side. If an overload occurs, the unit may temporarily shut down and reset automatically once the issue is resolved.
- Lights Not Turning On/Off: Verify the on/off/auto switch setting. In AUTO mode, ensure the photocell is not obstructed and is receiving adequate ambient light.
- Dim Lights: This can be caused by voltage drop, especially with long wire runs or too many fixtures on a single run. Refer to the "Calculating Voltage Drop" section under Setup and Installation to ensure your wiring is appropriate for your system's load and length.
- Intermittent Operation: The transformer includes a thermal reset breaker on the secondary side. If the unit overheats due to excessive load or environmental factors, it may cycle on and off. Reduce the load or ensure adequate ventilation.
If issues persist after checking these points, consult a qualified electrician.
