4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your TOTO ST733-03 Dalton Toilet Tank onto a compatible toilet bowl (sold separately).

  1. Prepare the Toilet Bowl: Ensure the toilet bowl is securely installed and the mounting surface for the tank is clean and level.
  2. Install Tank-to-Bowl Gasket: Place the large rubber gasket onto the threaded outlet at the bottom of the tank. Ensure it is seated correctly to create a watertight seal.
  3. Position the Tank: Carefully align the tank over the bolt holes on the back of the toilet bowl. Lower the tank onto the bowl, ensuring the gasket compresses evenly.
  4. Secure the Tank: Insert the tank bolts through the holes in the tank and the bowl. From underneath the bowl, place washers and then tighten the nuts onto the bolts. Tighten evenly, alternating between bolts, until the tank is snug and stable. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the porcelain.
  5. Connect Water Supply: Connect the flexible water supply line from your shut-off valve to the fill valve inlet at the bottom of the tank. Hand-tighten first, then use a wrench for a final quarter-turn.
  6. Check for Leaks: Slowly turn on the water supply valve. Allow the tank to fill. Inspect all connections (tank-to-bowl, water supply line) for any signs of leaks. Tighten connections slightly if necessary.
  7. Install Tank Lid: Place the tank lid securely on top of the tank.

5. Operating Instructions

The TOTO ST733-03 Dalton Toilet Tank utilizes a 1.6 Gallon Gravity Jet flushing system for efficient waste removal.

  • Flushing: To flush the toilet, press down firmly on the chrome plated trip lever located on the front of the tank. This activates the flush valve, releasing water from the tank into the bowl.
  • Refilling: After flushing, the tank will automatically refill to the appropriate water level, ready for the next use. The Gravity Jet system ensures a powerful and quiet flush with each activation.

6. Maintenance

Regular cleaning and basic maintenance will help ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your TOTO toilet tank.

6.1. Cleaning the Exterior

  • Use a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner specifically designed for bathroom fixtures.
  • Avoid abrasive powders, scouring pads, or cleaners containing harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or acid, as these can damage the finish.
  • Wipe the exterior surfaces, including the tank lid and trip lever, regularly to prevent mineral buildup and maintain shine.

6.2. Internal Component Check

  • Periodically remove the tank lid and inspect the internal components (fill valve, flush valve, flapper/seal) for wear or damage.
  • Ensure the chain connecting the trip lever to the flapper is not tangled or too tight/loose, as this can affect flushing performance.
  • If mineral deposits accumulate, gently clean them with a soft brush and a vinegar solution, then rinse thoroughly.

7. Troubleshooting

Refer to this section for solutions to common issues you might encounter.

7.1. Toilet Runs Continuously

  • Flapper/Seal Issue: The flapper or flush valve seal may not be seating properly. Inspect for debris, wear, or misalignment. Clean or replace if necessary.
  • Fill Valve Adjustment: The water level may be too high, causing water to flow into the overflow tube. Adjust the fill valve to lower the water level.
  • Trip Lever Chain: The chain connecting the trip lever to the flapper might be too short, holding the flapper slightly open. Adjust the chain length.

7.2. Weak or Incomplete Flush

  • Water Level Too Low: The water level in the tank might be too low to provide sufficient flushing power. Adjust the fill valve to raise the water level.
  • Flapper Not Opening Fully: The chain to the flapper might be too long, preventing it from opening completely. Shorten the chain.
  • Clogged Rim Jets/Siphon Jet: Mineral buildup in the rim jets or siphon jet of the toilet bowl (not the tank) can restrict water flow. This requires cleaning the bowl's jets.

7.3. Leaks Around the Tank Base

  • Tank-to-Bowl Gasket: The gasket between the tank and bowl may be improperly seated, worn, or damaged. Ensure it is correctly positioned and replace if necessary.
  • Tank Bolts: The tank bolts may not be tightened evenly or sufficiently. Gently tighten the nuts, alternating between them, but avoid overtightening.
  • Water Supply Connection: Check the connection of the water supply line to the fill valve for tightness.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, please contact TOTO customer support or a qualified plumber.
