Setup
Your PILOT Capless fountain pen is designed for ease of use. Follow these steps to prepare your pen for writing:
- Unscrew the Barrel: Gently twist the pen barrel counter-clockwise at the mid-section to separate the front and back halves.
- Insert Ink Cartridge: If using the included black ink cartridge, firmly push the narrow end of the cartridge into the back of the nib unit until it clicks into place. Ensure a secure connection to prevent leaks.
- Install Converter (Optional): If using a converter (sold separately, compatible with PILOT CON-20 or CON-50), remove the ink cartridge. Insert the converter firmly into the back of the nib unit. To fill the converter, submerge the nib into an ink bottle and twist or slide the converter mechanism to draw ink.
- Reassemble the Pen: Align the two halves of the barrel and twist clockwise until securely fastened.
- Prime the Nib: Hold the pen nib-down for a few moments to allow ink to flow to the nib. A few gentle shakes may help. You may also gently press the nib onto a piece of scrap paper to encourage ink flow.
The semi-transparent pipe included with the pen is for structural support and is not a converter. Please retain it.
Operating Instructions
The Capless design allows for quick and convenient deployment of the nib.
- Extend the Nib: Press the push-button mechanism at the top of the pen barrel. The nib will extend, and a small internal shutter will open to allow writing.
- Retract the Nib: Press the push-button mechanism again. The nib will retract, and the internal shutter will close, protecting the nib from drying out and preventing accidental ink marks.
- Writing: Hold the pen comfortably. The special alloy medium nib is designed for a smooth writing experience. Apply light pressure for finer lines or slightly more pressure for broader strokes, depending on your preference and the nib's flexibility.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your fountain pen.
- Regular Cleaning: If the pen is not used for an extended period, or when changing ink colors, it is recommended to clean the nib unit. Remove the nib unit from the barrel. Flush the nib unit with cool, clean water until the water runs clear. You can use a bulb syringe for more effective flushing.
- Drying: Allow the nib unit to air dry completely before reassembling or refilling with a new ink cartridge/converter.
- Storage: Always retract the nib when not in use to prevent it from drying out. Store the pen horizontally or nib-upright to prevent ink from pooling in the cap mechanism.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use alcohol or other harsh cleaning agents, as these can damage the pen's materials.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your PILOT Capless pen, try the following solutions:
- No Ink Flow:
- Ensure the ink cartridge or converter is properly seated.
- Check if the ink has dried in the nib. Clean the nib unit as described in the Maintenance section.
- Verify that the ink bottle is not empty if using a converter.
- Skipping or Inconsistent Lines:
- This can be caused by dried ink or paper fibers in the nib. Clean the nib thoroughly.
- Ensure you are using appropriate fountain pen ink. Some inks may not be suitable.
- Check your writing angle; fountain pens generally perform best at a consistent angle.
- Leaking:
- Ensure all parts of the pen are screwed together tightly.
- Verify the ink cartridge or converter is securely attached to the nib unit.
- Avoid shaking the pen vigorously.
