Introduction

Welcome to Monopoly: U.S. Space Program Edition! This special edition celebrates the 40th anniversary of NASA and brings the excitement of space exploration to the classic game of Monopoly. Players will buy, sell, and trade iconic space missions and celestial bodies, build Space Stations and Research Centers, and navigate the challenges of space travel. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for setting up, playing, and maintaining your game.

Setup

Before starting your first game, carefully unpack all components and familiarize yourself with them.

Components Checklist:

• 1 Game Board
• 8 Pewter Game Pieces (e.g., Astronaut, Rocket, Satellite, Lunar Lander)
• 2 Dice
• 32 Mission Control Cards (replacing Chance)
• 16 Launch Cards (replacing Community Chest)
• 16 Orbit Cards (replacing Community Chest)
• 1 Pack of Monopoly Money (themed for space currency)
• 32 Space Stations (replacing Houses)
• 12 Research Centers (replacing Hotels)

Initial Game Setup:

1. Place the game board on a flat surface.
2. Separate the Mission Control, Launch, and Orbit cards. Shuffle each deck individually and place them face-down on their designated spaces on the board.
3. Each player chooses one of the 8 pewter game pieces and places it on the "GO" (Launch Pad) space.
4. Select one player to be the Banker. The Banker is responsible for all money transactions with the Bank. The Banker may also play, but must keep their personal money separate from the Bank's funds.
5. The Banker distributes starting money to each player:
   • Two $500 bills
   • Two $100 bills
   • Two $50 bills
   • Six $20 bills
   • Five $10 bills
   • Five $5 bills
   • Five $1 bills
6. Place the Space Stations and Research Centers near the board.
7. The Title Deed cards are placed next to their corresponding properties on the board.

Operating (How to Play)

The objective of Monopoly: U.S. Space Program Edition is to be the last player remaining with money, having driven all other players into bankruptcy.

Game Flow:

1. Starting the Game: Each player rolls both dice. The player with the highest total goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2. Player's Turn: On your turn, roll both dice and move your game piece clockwise around the board the number of spaces indicated by the dice.
3. Landing on a Space: The action you take depends on the space you land on:
   • Unowned Property (Space Mission, Planet, etc.): You may buy the property from the Bank for the price printed on that space. If you choose not to buy it, the Banker immediately auctions it to the highest bidder.
   • Owned Property: If another player owns the property, you must pay them rent according to the Title Deed card. Rent increases if the owner has built Space Stations or Research Centers.
   • Mission Control / Launch / Orbit: Draw the top card from the corresponding deck and follow its instructions.
   • Tax Spaces (e.g., Launch Tax, Fuel Tax): Pay the amount indicated to the Bank.
   • "GO" (Launch Pad): When you pass or land on "GO", collect $200 from the Bank.
   • Free Parking (Space Station): This is a safe space; no action is required.
   • "Just Visiting" / "Detention Center" (Jail): If you land on "Just Visiting", you are simply visiting. If you are sent to "Detention Center", you must follow the rules for getting out.
   • "Go to Detention Center": Move your piece directly to the "Detention Center" space. Do not collect $200 for passing "GO".
4. Doubles: If you roll doubles, you take your turn as usual, then roll the dice again for another turn. If you roll doubles three times in a row, you immediately go to "Detention Center".
5. Building Space Stations and Research Centers: Once you own all properties in a color group, you can begin building Space Stations. You must build evenly across the properties in that group. Four Space Stations can be upgraded to one Research Center.
6. Mortgaging Properties: If you need money, you can mortgage properties to the Bank. Mortgaged properties do not collect rent.
7. Trading: Players can trade properties, money, and "Get Out of Detention Center" cards with each other at any time.
8. Bankruptcy: If you owe more money than you can pay (even by selling Space Stations/Research Centers and mortgaging properties), you are bankrupt and out of the game. All your assets are turned over to the player you owe, or to the Bank if you owe the Bank.

The game ends when only one player remains. That player is the winner!
