3M Privacy Filter - Instruction Manual

Model: PF21.3

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your 3M Privacy Filter. Designed to protect your on-screen data from side views, this filter also offers an enhanced viewing experience and screen protection.

The 3M Privacy Filter utilizes patented microlouver technology to create a "No Spy Zone," ensuring visual privacy in open environments. It is reversible, offering both a glossy side for clarity and a matte side to reduce glare and hide fingerprints.

2. Setup & Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance of your 3M Privacy Filter. Please follow these steps carefully:

  1. Measure Your Screen: Before opening the package, accurately measure the viewable height and width of your monitor's screen. Do not include the screen frame or bezel in your measurements. Select the filter size that matches your exact measurements or is slightly smaller.

  2. Clean Your Screen: Ensure your monitor screen is clean and free of dust, smudges, or fingerprints. Use a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Choose Your Side: The filter is reversible. One side is glossy for increased clarity, and the other is matte to reduce glare and hide fingerprints. Choose the side that best suits your viewing preference.
  4. Apply Attachment System: The filter comes with two easy-on, easy-off attachment systems. Typically, clear adhesive strips are provided. Carefully peel back the protective film from the adhesive strips and apply them to three points as indicated in the instructions (e.g., one on each top corner, and one on the bottom middle).

  5. Position the Filter: Carefully align the privacy filter with your monitor screen and gently press it into place, ensuring the adhesive strips make firm contact. The filter should sit flush against the screen.

3. Operating Instructions

The 3M Privacy Filter operates passively, providing visual privacy through its microlouver technology. No active controls are required.

  • Privacy Functionality: The filter creates a 60-degree "No Spy Zone," meaning on-screen data is visible only to the person directly in front of the monitor. Viewers from side angles will see a darkened or "blacked out" screen.

  • Reversible Sides: As mentioned in setup, you can flip the filter to use either the glossy side for a clearer image or the matte side to reduce reflections and glare.
  • Screen Protection: In addition to privacy, the filter acts as a protective layer, guarding your fragile LCD screen against scratches, scuffs, smudges, and minor impacts from everyday use.

Understanding Visual Hacking

Visual hacking refers to the act of obtaining confidential information by looking over someone's shoulder or viewing their screen from an angle. The 3M Privacy Filter is designed to combat this, making it ideal for use in open-plan offices, public spaces, or any high-traffic area where sensitive information is displayed.

4. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your 3M Privacy Filter, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the surface of the filter. For stubborn smudges, a small amount of screen cleaner or water can be applied to the cloth (not directly to the filter). Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Handling: When removing or adjusting the filter, handle it by the edges to avoid leaving fingerprints or damaging the surface.
  • Storage: If you need to store the filter, keep it in its original packaging or a protective sleeve to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your 3M Privacy Filter, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
