4. Installation Instructions
Follow these steps carefully to install your Leviton BR20-I duplex receptacle:
- Turn Off Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the outlet you are working on and turn off the power. Verify the power is off using a voltage tester.
- Remove Old Receptacle (if applicable): Unscrew the wallplate and then the mounting screws holding the old receptacle in the electrical box. Carefully pull the old receptacle out of the box.
- Disconnect Wires: Disconnect the wires from the old receptacle. Note which wire was connected to which terminal (hot, neutral, ground). Typically, black wires are hot, white wires are neutral, and bare copper or green wires are ground.
- Prepare Wires: Strip approximately 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) of insulation from the end of each wire. For solid wire, create a hook shape at the end of each wire.
- Connect Ground Wire: Connect the bare copper or green insulated ground wire to the green grounding screw on the receptacle. Ensure the wire forms a full loop around the screw in a clockwise direction and tighten securely.
- Connect Neutral Wire: Connect the white (neutral) wire to one of the silver-colored terminal screws. Ensure the wire forms a full loop around the screw in a clockwise direction and tighten securely.
- Connect Hot Wires: Connect the black (hot) wires to the brass-colored terminal screws. Ensure the wire forms a full loop around the screw in a clockwise direction and tighten securely. If there are two hot wires, use both brass screws.
- Secure Receptacle: Carefully fold the wires into the electrical box. Insert the new receptacle into the box and secure it with the provided mounting screws.
- Install Wallplate: Attach the wallplate over the receptacle.
- Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Test the receptacle with a known working device.

5. Operating Instructions
Once properly installed and power is restored, the Leviton BR20-I duplex receptacle functions as a standard electrical outlet. Simply insert the plug of your electrical device into either of the two receptacles. Ensure the plug is fully inserted for a secure connection.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: To clean the receptacle, ensure power is off at the circuit breaker. Wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Periodic Inspection: Periodically check the receptacle for any signs of damage, such as cracks, discoloration, or loose connections. If any damage is observed, turn off power and replace the receptacle.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power at the receptacle. | Circuit breaker tripped or fuse blown. Loose wiring connection. | Check and reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse. Turn off power and check wiring connections for tightness. |
| Plug feels loose in the receptacle. | Worn contacts or incorrect plug type. | Ensure the plug is a straight blade type. If contacts are worn, the receptacle may need replacement. |
| Receptacle is hot to the touch. | Overload or loose connection. | Immediately unplug devices. Turn off power and inspect wiring for loose connections. Reduce load on the circuit. If problem persists, consult a qualified electrician. |
If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, consult a qualified electrician.
