1. Overview
This package contains one BurgerTime™ cartridge, two controller overlays, and playing instructions. BurgerTime™ is an arcade-style video game where you control a chef tasked with building hamburgers while avoiding various food enemies.
As the burger chef, your objective is to assemble delicious hamburgers by running across platforms and dropping ingredients. You must navigate mazes while being pursued by menacing hot dogs, evil eggs, and perilous pickles. Utilize pepper to temporarily stop enemies or strategically drop ingredients on them to score points. Successfully complete seven mazes to become a certified burger-maniac.
2. Setup
- Insert Cartridge: Ensure your Intellivision console is powered off. Carefully insert the BurgerTime game cartridge into the cartridge slot until it is firmly seated.
- Apply Controller Overlays: Place the provided BurgerTime controller overlays onto your Intellivision controllers. These overlays indicate the specific functions of each button and directional disc for optimal gameplay.
- Power On: Turn on your Intellivision console and television. Select the appropriate input channel for your console.
3. Operating Instructions (Gameplay)
3.1 Game Objective
The primary goal is to complete all hamburgers on the screen by walking over each ingredient (buns, lettuce, tomatoes, patties) to make them fall to the plate below. Once all burgers are assembled, you advance to the next maze.
3.2 Controls
Refer to the controller overlays for specific button assignments. Generally, the directional disc controls your chef's movement (up, down, left, right) across ladders and platforms. A designated action button (usually one of the side buttons) is used to deploy pepper.
3.3 Enemies (Nasties)
You will encounter three types of enemies, referred to as "nasties": pickles, eggs, and hot dogs. These enemies will relentlessly chase your chef through the maze. Avoid contact with them, as it will result in losing a life. The nasties become quicker and more aggressive the longer you survive in a level.
3.4 Pepper Usage
Your chef is equipped with a limited supply of pepper. Press the pepper button to temporarily stun nearby enemies, allowing you to escape or gain an advantage. Collect coffee cups or fries that appear in the maze to replenish your pepper supply.
3.5 Scoring Points
- Dropping Ingredients: Score points by walking over burger ingredients (buns, lettuce, tomatoes, patties) to make them fall.
- Squashing Nasties: Earn significant points by making an ingredient fall onto an enemy. Even better, make an ingredient fall through multiple levels, carrying enemies with it, for even higher scores.
- Extra Lives: You begin the game with 5 chefs (lives). An additional chef is awarded for every 10,000 points you score.
3.6 Game Progression
The game features seven distinct mazes, each requiring different strategies to master. Successfully completing a maze will lead you to the next, with increasing difficulty.
3.7 Player Count
BurgerTime supports 1 or 2 players.

Image 1: Screenshots from BurgerTime Intellivision gameplay. The left image shows a score of 31550, with the chef navigating a maze of burger ingredients and enemies. The right image shows a score of 9500, depicting a different maze layout with similar gameplay elements. Both images illustrate the pixelated graphics typical of Intellivision games, featuring the chef, burger components, and enemy characters (hot dogs, eggs, pickles) within a blue maze structure.
4. Maintenance
- Cartridge Care: Keep the game cartridge clean and free of dust. Store it in its original case or a protective sleeve when not in use. Avoid touching the gold connector pins.
- Cleaning: If the cartridge pins become dirty, gently clean them with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry completely before reinserting into the console.
- Storage: Store the game in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and humidity to prevent damage.
5. Troubleshooting
- Game Not Starting:
Ensure the cartridge is fully inserted into the console. Power off and on the console. Clean the cartridge connector pins as described in the Maintenance section.
- Controller Issues:
Verify that the controller overlays are correctly placed. Check that the controllers are properly connected to the console. Test with another game if possible to determine if the issue is with the controller or the game.
- Graphics or Sound Glitches:
This can sometimes be resolved by re-inserting the cartridge or cleaning the pins. Ensure your television is set to the correct input and video format.
