Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of your Leviton 15 Amp Decora Tamper-Resistant Duplex Electrical Wall Outlet, model T5325-T. This device is designed to enhance electrical safety, particularly in environments where children may be present, by preventing accidental insertion of foreign objects into the receptacle openings.
Safety Information
WARNING: To avoid fire, shock, or death, always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before wiring. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician or in accordance with local electrical codes and regulations. This device is designed for indoor use only.
- Always disconnect power before working on electrical circuits.
- Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.
- The tamper-resistant (TR) feature is designed to prevent the insertion of single objects into the receptacle openings, reducing the risk of electrical shock.
- Do not attempt to bypass or modify the tamper-resistant mechanism.
Setup and Installation
Before beginning installation, ensure you have the necessary tools, including a screwdriver, wire strippers, and electrical tape. Confirm that the power to the circuit is OFF at the main service panel.
1. Wiring the Outlet
The Leviton T5325-T outlet supports both Quickwire™ terminations and traditional screw terminal wiring. Always refer to the device's markings for specific wire gauge compatibility.
- Quickwire™ Terminations: These are suitable for 14-gauge solid copper wire ONLY. Strip approximately 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) of insulation from the wire. Insert the stripped end firmly into the Quickwire™ hole until it clicks into place.
- Screw Terminals (Side Wiring): For larger gauge wires (e.g., 12-gauge) or stranded wire, use the screw terminals. Form a hook at the end of the stripped wire (approximately 3/4 inch or 19 mm stripped) and loop it clockwise around the terminal screw. Tighten the screw securely.
- Connect the hot (black) wire to the brass-colored screw, the neutral (white) wire to the silver-colored screw, and the ground (green or bare copper) wire to the green ground screw.

2. Mounting the Outlet
Once wired, carefully fold the wires into the electrical box. Secure the outlet to the electrical box using the mounting screws provided. Ensure the outlet is flush with the wall surface.

Operating Instructions
To use the outlet, simply insert a standard two-prong or three-prong electrical plug into the receptacle openings. The tamper-resistant shutters will open only when both prongs of a plug are inserted simultaneously, ensuring safe and reliable power access.
Maintenance
The Leviton T5325-T outlet requires minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect the outlet and faceplate for any signs of damage, such as cracks or discoloration. Clean the surface with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power at outlet | Tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse; loose wiring connection. | Check and reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse. If problem persists, inspect wiring (with power off) or consult a qualified electrician. |
| Plug difficult to insert | Tamper-resistant shutters are engaged; plug prongs are misaligned. | Ensure both plug prongs are inserted simultaneously and with even pressure. Do not force the plug. |
| Outlet feels warm | Overload on circuit; loose connection; faulty device. | Disconnect appliances from the outlet. If warmth persists, turn off power and consult a qualified electrician immediately. |
