2. Important Safety Instructions

When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, including the following:

  1. Read all instructions.
  2. Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
  3. To protect against fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, do not immerse cord, plugs, or appliance in water or other liquid.
  4. Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
  5. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning the appliance.
  6. Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug or after the appliance malfunctions, or has been damaged in any manner. Return appliance to the nearest authorized service facility for examination, repair, or adjustment.
  7. The use of accessory attachments not recommended by the appliance manufacturer may result in fire, electric shock, or injury to persons.
  8. Do not use outdoors.
  9. Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
  10. Do not place on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven.
  11. Always attach plug to appliance first, then plug cord into the wall outlet. To disconnect, turn any control to “off”, then remove plug from wall outlet.
  12. Do not use appliance for other than intended use.
  13. Ensure the grinder is unplugged before attempting to adjust the burrs or clean any internal components.
  14. Never insert fingers or foreign objects into the grinding chamber or bean hopper while the grinder is operating or plugged in.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all parts are present: the grinder base, bean hopper with lid, and grounds container (if included, for doserless models, grounds are dispensed directly). Retain packaging for future transport or storage.

3.2 Placement

Place the grinder on a stable, flat, and dry surface. Ensure there is adequate space around the unit for ventilation and ease of use. Keep the grinder away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

3.3 Installing the Bean Hopper

  1. Ensure the grinder is unplugged.
  2. Align the bean hopper with the opening on top of the grinder.
  3. Gently push down and twist the hopper clockwise until it locks securely into place. The hopper should sit firmly without wobbling.
  4. Place the lid on the bean hopper.

3.4 Power Connection

Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet. Ensure the voltage matches the specifications listed on the grinder's rating label.

4. Operation

4.1 Filling the Bean Hopper

Open the bean hopper lid and pour fresh, roasted coffee beans into the hopper. Do not overfill; the capacity is approximately 200 grams (7 ounces).

4.2 Adjusting Grind Settings

The Rancilio Rocky features a stepped grind adjustment system. To adjust the grind fineness:

  1. Ensure the grinder is running or has a small amount of beans in the hopper to prevent burr damage. Adjusting without the motor running can cause burrs to seize.
  2. Rotate the bean hopper. Turning it clockwise results in a finer grind, while turning it counter-clockwise results in a coarser grind.
  3. The numbers on the adjustment collar indicate the grind setting. Lower numbers typically correspond to finer grinds (e.g., espresso), and higher numbers to coarser grinds (e.g., French press).
  4. Make small adjustments and test the grind to find your preferred setting.

4.3 Grinding Coffee (Doserless Operation)

The Rocky Doserless model dispenses grounds directly into your portafilter or a separate container.

  1. Place your portafilter or grounds container under the dispensing chute.
  2. Press the power switch to turn on the grinder.
  3. The grinder will begin to dispense grounds. Monitor the amount and turn off the grinder once the desired quantity is achieved.
  4. For optimal espresso, grind fresh beans immediately before brewing.

5. Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Rancilio Rocky grinder.

5.1 Daily Cleaning

  • Wipe down the exterior of the grinder with a damp cloth.
  • Brush away any loose coffee grounds from the dispensing chute and surrounding areas.

5.2 Weekly / Bi-Weekly Cleaning (Burrs and Hopper)

  1. Unplug the grinder from the power outlet.
  2. Remove the bean hopper by twisting it counter-clockwise and lifting it off. Empty any remaining beans.
  3. Use a brush or vacuum cleaner to remove any coffee residue from the hopper and the grinding chamber opening.
  4. To access the burrs, rotate the grind adjustment collar (the bean hopper mounting ring) counter-clockwise past the coarsest setting until it can be lifted off.
  5. Carefully remove the upper burr. Use a stiff brush (a dedicated coffee grinder brush is recommended) to clean both the upper and lower burrs, removing any accumulated coffee oils and grounds.
  6. Clean the threads of the adjustment collar and the grinding chamber.
  7. Reassemble the burrs and hopper, ensuring all parts are securely in place.

Caution: Do not wash burrs or internal components with water. Water can cause rust and damage the burrs.
