1. Introduction

The ADC Adtemp 413B-1 is a compact digital stick thermometer designed for accurate and reliable temperature measurement. It features a rapid response time of approximately 30-40 seconds and provides an audible tone upon completion of measurement. The device also includes a last-reading memory function for user convenience.

This manual provides essential instructions for the proper setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your ADC Adtemp 413B-1 Digital Thermometer.

2. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in the package:

3. Setup

Before initial use, ensure the battery is properly installed. The thermometer comes with a pre-installed 1.55V coin-type battery. For hygienic use, always apply a new probe sheath before each measurement.

3.1 Battery Installation/Verification

1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the thermometer.
2. Carefully remove the cover.
3. Verify that the 1.55V coin-type battery is correctly placed with the positive (+) side facing up.
4. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2 Applying a Probe Sheath

For sanitary reasons and to prevent cross-contamination, always use a new, disposable probe sheath for each measurement. Slide a new probe sheath over the thermometer tip until it is fully covered.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

• To turn on the thermometer, press the power button. A short beep will sound.
• The display will briefly show the last measured temperature for approximately 2 seconds.
• Following this, a self-test display (188.8°F/°C) will appear.
• The display will then show 'L°F' or 'L°C' with a flashing '°F' or '°C', indicating the thermometer is ready for measurement.
• The thermometer will automatically shut off after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. To manually turn off, press and hold the power button briefly.

4.2 Taking a Temperature Measurement

Ensure a fresh probe sheath is applied before each use.

1. Turn on the thermometer as described in Section 4.1.
2. Place the thermometer tip according to the desired measurement method:
• Oral Use: Place the probe tip well under the tongue. Close the mouth and hold the thermometer in place.
• Axillary (Underarm) Use: Place the probe tip in the center of the armpit. Hold the arm firmly against the body to keep the thermometer in place.
• Rectal Use: Apply a water-soluble lubricant to the probe tip. Gently insert the tip no more than 1/2 inch into the rectum.
3. Hold the thermometer in position until the audible tone sounds, indicating the measurement is complete. The temperature will be displayed on the screen.
4. Remove the thermometer and read the temperature.
5. Dispose of the used probe sheath and clean the thermometer as described in Section 5.1.

4.3 Temperature Unit Conversion (°F/°C)

To switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C):

1. Ensure the thermometer is turned off.
2. Press and hold the power button for approximately 3-5 seconds.
3. The unit on the display will change from °F to °C or vice versa.
4. Release the button, and the new unit will be set for future measurements.

4.4 Last Reading Memory

The thermometer automatically stores the last measured temperature. This reading is displayed briefly on the screen when the device is powered on, before entering measurement mode.

5. Maintenance and Care

5.1 Cleaning and Disinfection

To ensure hygiene and proper function:

• After each use, remove and discard the probe sheath.
• Clean the thermometer probe with soap and cool water or by wiping with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol).
• Wipe the probe dry with a soft, clean cloth.
• Do not immerse the entire thermometer in water or any other cleaning solutions.
• Do not use abrasive cleaning agents or harsh chemicals, as these may damage the device.

5.2 Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator appears on the display, the battery needs replacement.

1. Locate and remove the battery compartment cover.
2. Carefully remove the old battery.
3. Insert a new 1.55V coin-type battery (e.g., LR41 or SR41) with the positive (+) side facing up.
4. Securely close the battery compartment cover.
5. Dispose of the old battery according to local regulations.

5.3 Storage

Store the thermometer in its protective scabbard-type case when not in use. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and out of reach of children.

6. Troubleshooting

• Display shows 'Lo' or 'L': This indicates that the measured temperature is below the measurable range (e.g., below 90.0°F / 32.0°C) or that the thermometer is ready for measurement.
• Display shows 'Hi' or 'H': This indicates that the measured temperature is above the measurable range (e.g., above 109.9°F / 42.9°C).
• Blank display: Check the battery. If the battery is low or depleted, replace it as described in Section 5.2.
• Inaccurate or inconsistent readings: Ensure the thermometer probe is properly placed and held steady during the entire measurement period. Verify that a fresh probe sheath is correctly applied. Avoid movement during measurement. If issues persist, replace the battery.
