Setup and Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal adhesion and durability. Ensure the area is well-ventilated.

  1. Clean the Surface: Remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants by washing the surface with a commercial cleaner or other suitable cleaning method. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely.
  2. Remove Loose Rust and Paint: Scrape off any loose rust and peeling paint with a wire brush or sandpaper. Lightly sand glossy surfaces to create a profile for better adhesion.
  3. Mask Adjacent Areas: Use painter's tape and drop cloths to protect surrounding areas from overspray.
  4. Do Not Prime: A primer is not necessary for this high heat enamel.
Diagram showing application steps: 1. Sand and clean surface. Do not prime. 2. Shake can well, spray in light layers. 3. Dry for 2 hours in a ventilated setting. 4. Remove painter's tape. Heat cure at 450°F for 1 hour.

Operating Instructions (Application)

Follow these steps for effective application of the High Heat Enamel Spray Paint:

  1. Shake Well: Shake the can vigorously for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue to shake occasionally during use.
  2. Apply in Light Layers: Hold the can 10-16 inches from the surface and spray in a steady, back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Apply several thin coats a few minutes apart rather than one heavy coat to avoid drips and ensure even coverage.
  3. Drying Time: Allow the painted surface to dry for at least 2 hours in a well-ventilated area before proceeding to the heat cure.
  4. Heat Cure: After drying, remove any painter's tape. Heat cure the painted item at 450°F (232°C) for 1 hour. This process helps the paint achieve its full durability and heat resistance. The finish may transition from a satin to a flat appearance after heat curing.

Maintenance

Once applied and heat-cured, the Rust-Oleum High Heat Enamel provides a durable finish that resists outdoor weathering, rust, corrosion, and chipping. To maintain the appearance and protective qualities of the painted surface:

  • Regularly clean the surface with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads that could damage the finish.
  • Inspect the painted surface periodically for any signs of wear or damage. Touch up small areas as needed following the application instructions.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Poor Adhesion / FlakingImproper surface preparation (e.g., surface not clean, loose rust/paint not removed). Insufficient heat curing.Ensure surface is thoroughly cleaned and free of contaminants. Remove all loose material. Ensure heat cure is performed at the specified temperature and duration.
Uneven Finish / DripsApplying too much paint in one coat. Holding can too close to surface.Apply multiple thin coats instead of one heavy coat. Maintain recommended distance (10-16 inches) from the surface during spraying.
Color Change After Heat CureThis is a normal characteristic of the product. No action required. The paint is designed to transition from a satin to a flat finish after heat curing.
