3. Setup

Before operating the grinder, ensure all components are correctly assembled and secured.

3.1 Attaching the Side Handle

The side handle can be installed on either side of the tool for operator convenience. Simply screw the handle into the threaded opening on the side of the gear housing until it is secure.

3.2 Installing/Changing Wheels and Guards

  1. Ensure the grinder is unplugged from the power source.
  2. Press the spindle lock button located on the gear housing to prevent the spindle from rotating.
  3. Use the provided lock nut wrench (782422-3) to loosen and remove the lock nut and outer flange.
  4. Place the desired 4-1/2" grinding wheel or diamond blade onto the inner flange, ensuring the label side faces the tool.
  5. Re-attach the outer flange and tighten the lock nut securely with the wrench while holding the spindle lock button.
  6. To adjust the wheel guard, loosen the clamping screw, position the guard for optimal protection, and then re-tighten the screw. The tool-less design allows for quick adjustments.

4. Operation

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection, when operating the grinder.

4.1 Powering On/Off

The Makita 9557PBX1 features an extra-large paddle switch for activation. To start the grinder, first depress the small lock-off switch (safety toggle) and then squeeze the main paddle switch. Releasing the paddle switch will turn the tool off.

4.2 Continuous Operation

For continuous operation, activate the paddle switch as described above, and then push in the lock-on button located at the back of the paddle. To release from continuous operation, simply squeeze and release the paddle switch.

4.3 AC/DC Switch
