Product Overview

Figure 1: Front view of the Rolls RA170 Power Amplifier. The front panel features a Power indicator LED, a Volume control knob, and two Clip LEDs.

Figure 2: Rear view of the Rolls RA170 Power Amplifier. This image displays the AC power input, 70V speaker output terminals, and main input jacks (RCA and 1/4" unbalanced).
Front Panel Controls and Indicators:
- Power LED: Illuminates when the unit is powered on.
- Volume Control: Adjusts the overall output level of the amplifier.
- Clip LEDs: Indicate when the amplifier's output circuitry is approaching or reaching overload. Brief flashes are acceptable, but continuous illumination suggests the input signal or volume is too high.
Rear Panel Connections:
- AC Power Input: Standard IEC power inlet for connecting the included power cord (120VAC 50/60Hz 100VA, 1.5A Fuse).
- 70V Output: Spring-loaded terminals for connecting 70-volt constant voltage speakers. No external transformer is required for speaker connection.
- Main Inputs: Provides a choice of RCA or 1/4" unbalanced input jacks for connecting audio sources.
- Serial Number: Unique identifier for the unit.
Setup
- Placement: Position the RA170 in a well-ventilated area, preferably in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Ensure adequate space for airflow around the unit.
- Input Connection: Connect your audio source (e.g., mixer, preamplifier) to either the RCA or 1/4" unbalanced input jacks on the rear panel. Use high-quality shielded cables to minimize noise.
- Speaker Connection: Connect your 70-volt speakers to the spring-loaded 70V OUTPUT terminals on the rear panel. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for all speakers. Do not connect low-impedance speakers directly to these terminals.
- Power Connection: With the amplifier's volume control set to minimum, connect the supplied AC power cord to the AC power input on the rear panel and then to a suitable 120VAC 50/60Hz power outlet.
Operating Instructions
- Power On: Turn on your audio source first, then power on the RA170 amplifier. The Power LED on the front panel will illuminate.
- Adjust Volume: Slowly increase the Volume control on the front panel to the desired listening level.
- Monitor Clip LEDs: Observe the Clip LEDs. If they flash frequently or stay illuminated, reduce the input signal level from your source or decrease the amplifier's volume control to prevent distortion and potential damage.
- Power Off: When finished, turn the amplifier's volume control to minimum, then power off the RA170 before turning off your audio source.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Ventilation: Regularly check that the ventilation slots are free from dust and obstructions to ensure proper cooling.
- Fuse Replacement: The unit uses a 1.5A fuse. If the unit does not power on, check the fuse located near the AC input. Only replace with a fuse of the same type and rating. If the fuse blows repeatedly, seek qualified service.
Troubleshooting
- No Power:
- Ensure the power cord is securely connected to both the amplifier and a working power outlet.
- Check the power fuse on the rear panel and replace if necessary (1.5A).
- No Sound:
- Verify that the audio source is active and connected correctly to the amplifier's inputs.
- Check all speaker connections for proper polarity and secure contact.
- Ensure the amplifier's volume control is turned up.
- Confirm that the speakers are 70-volt compatible and functioning correctly.
- Distorted Sound / Clipping:
- Reduce the input signal level from your audio source.
- Lower the amplifier's Volume control.
- Ensure the total load of connected 70-volt speakers does not exceed the amplifier's 70-watt output capacity.
If problems persist after attempting these troubleshooting steps, please contact qualified service personnel.
