3. Setup and Connections

Follow these steps to properly set up your Samson S-phone amplifier:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully unpack the S-phone and inspect it for any signs of damage. Retain the packaging material for future transport or storage.
  2. Placement: Place the S-phone on a stable, flat surface or mount it in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Ensure proper ventilation.
  3. Main Audio Input: Connect your main stereo audio source (e.g., mixer, audio interface) to the MAIN INPUTS (L/R) on the rear panel using balanced TRS or unbalanced TS cables.
  4. Auxiliary Inputs: For individual channel mixes, connect auxiliary audio sources to the AUX IN jacks on the front panel for each channel, or the corresponding AUX IN jacks on the rear panel.
  5. Headphone Outputs: Connect headphones to the PHONES outputs. Each channel has one front-panel output and two rear-panel outputs, allowing up to three headphones per channel.
  6. Link Output: If connecting multiple S-phone units, use the LINK OUTPUT on the rear panel to send the main stereo signal to another S-phone's main input.

4. Operating Instructions

The S-phone offers comprehensive control over each headphone mix.

4.1. Master Section Controls

  • MASTER VOLUME: Adjusts the overall output level of the main stereo input to all channels.
  • MASTER LEVEL METERS: 8-segment LED meters display the master stereo input level. Aim for levels that illuminate the green LEDs, avoiding the red "CLIP" LED.
  • MONO/STEREO Switch: Toggles the main input between stereo and mono operation. In mono, the left and right signals are summed.

4.2. Individual Channel Controls (Channels 1-4)

  • CHANNEL LEVEL METERS: 8-segment LED meters display the output level for each individual channel.
  • VOLUME: Controls the output level for the headphones connected to that specific channel.
  • BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency content of the channel's output.
  • TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency content of the channel's output.
  • AUX IN: (Front Panel) 1/4-inch input for connecting an auxiliary audio source to be mixed with the main signal for that channel.
  • BALANCE: This control has two functions depending on the ST/2CH switch setting:
    • When ST/2CH is set to ST (Stereo): The BALANCE control adjusts the left-to-right balance of the stereo signal.
    • When ST/2CH is set to 2CH (Two Channel/More Me): The BALANCE control adjusts the mix ratio between the main stereo input and the auxiliary input for that channel. Turning it left favors the main input, turning it right favors the auxiliary input. This is often referred to as the "More Me" function, allowing a performer to hear more of their own instrument or vocal.
  • ST/2CH Switch: Selects the mode for the BALANCE control, as described above.
  • PHONES Outputs: (Front and Rear Panels) Connect headphones to these 1/4-inch stereo outputs.

5. Maintenance

Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your S-phone amplifier.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the unit in a cool, dry place, preferably in its original packaging.
  • Ventilation: Regularly check that the ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris.
  • Cable Connections: Ensure all cables are securely connected and free from damage. Avoid excessive strain on input/output jacks.
