Introduction
The Behringer DD400 is a versatile digital delay and echo effects pedal designed for guitarists and other musicians. It offers a wide range of delay effects, from subtle echoes to long, atmospheric repeats, enhancing your sound with depth and dimension. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your DD400 pedal.
Understanding Delay
Delay is an audio effect that creates an echo by repeating a sound after a short period. Each repeated sound typically becomes quieter than the previous one, gradually fading out. The Behringer DD400 allows you to control various parameters of this echo, including the delay time, the number of repeats (feedback), and the mix level of the effect.

Controls and Connections
- LEVEL Knob: Adjusts the volume of the delayed signal.
- FEEDBACK Knob: Controls the number of repeats. Higher settings result in more echoes.
- TIME Knob: Sets the delay time, from short slap-back echoes to long, ambient delays.
- MODE Knob: Selects one of the 7 delay modes, including various delay time ranges and the HOLD mode.
- IN Jack: Input for your instrument cable.
- OUT A Jack: Main output for the processed signal.
- DIR OUT Jack: Direct output for the unprocessed signal, useful for stereo setups.
- ON/BATT LED: Illuminates when the effect is active and indicates battery status.
- Footswitch: Engages/disengages the effect and activates Tap Tempo/HOLD mode.
- 9V DC Input: For connecting an optional power adapter.
Setup
- Power Supply:
- Battery: Open the battery compartment on the underside of the pedal and insert a 9V battery. The ON/BATT LED will dim when the battery is low.
- AC Adapter: Connect an optional BEHRINGER PSU-SB DC power supply (not included) to the 9V DC input jack.
- Connections:
- Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the IN jack using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Connect the OUT A jack to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain.
- For stereo operation, connect the DIR OUT jack to a second amplifier or input.
- Initial Settings: Before powering on, set the LEVEL, FEEDBACK, and TIME knobs to their minimum positions to avoid sudden loud sounds.
Operation
Basic Delay Operation
- Press the footswitch to engage the effect. The blue ON/BATT LED will illuminate.
- Rotate the MODE knob to select your desired delay type. The modes offer different delay time ranges (e.g., S 200ms, S 500ms, S 1300ms, M 200ms, M 500ms, M 1300ms) and the HOLD mode.
- Adjust the TIME knob to set the duration of the delay.
- Use the FEEDBACK knob to control the number of repeats. Lower settings produce fewer repeats, while higher settings create a longer, decaying echo.
- Adjust the LEVEL knob to blend the delayed signal with your dry signal.
- Press the footswitch again to bypass the effect.
Tap Tempo Feature
The Tap Tempo feature allows you to set the delay time by tapping the footswitch in rhythm with your music.
- Ensure the pedal is engaged (LED on).
- Hold down the footswitch for approximately 2 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. This indicates Tap Tempo mode is active.
- Tap the footswitch two or more times at your desired tempo. The delay time will automatically synchronize with your taps.
- To exit Tap Tempo mode, simply stop tapping. The pedal will revert to normal operation with the newly set delay time.
HOLD Mode
The HOLD mode allows you to record a short audio phrase and loop it continuously, enabling you to play over the looped sound.
- Select the HOLD position on the MODE knob.
- Press and hold the footswitch. The LED will illuminate.
- Play the riff or phrase you wish to loop. The maximum recording time is approximately 1.3 seconds.
- Release the footswitch to end recording. The recorded phrase will now loop continuously.
- You can play your instrument over the looping phrase.
- To stop the loop, press the footswitch again.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Battery Replacement: If using battery power, replace the 9V battery when the ON/BATT LED dims or the effect performance degrades. Always remove the battery if the pedal will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Cable Care: Ensure all cables are in good condition and properly connected to prevent signal loss or noise.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound or weak sound when effect is engaged. | Low battery; incorrect cable connection; LEVEL knob set too low. | Replace battery or use AC adapter; check all cable connections; increase LEVEL knob setting. |
| Unwanted noise (hum, static). | Poor power supply; faulty cables; electromagnetic interference. | Use a regulated power supply; try different cables; move pedal away from other electronic devices. |
| Effect not engaging/disengaging. | Footswitch malfunction; internal issue. | Ensure firm press on footswitch; if problem persists, contact support. |
| Delay time not changing with Tap Tempo. | Not in Tap Tempo mode; insufficient taps. | Hold footswitch for 2 seconds to enter Tap Tempo mode (LED flashes); tap at least twice. |
