Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your OLYMPUS E-3 Digital SLR Camera. The OLYMPUS E-3 is engineered for photography enthusiasts, offering a robust design, high image quality, and advanced features for reliable performance in various shooting conditions. Key features include a newly developed 11-point twin cross sensor autofocus system, high-speed continuous shooting, and a durable, weather-sealed body.

Setup
1. Battery Installation and Charging
Insert the supplied lithium-ion battery into the battery compartment located at the bottom of the camera. Ensure it clicks into place. Use the provided charger to fully charge the battery before first use. A fully charged battery ensures optimal camera performance.
2. Memory Card Insertion
Open the memory card slot cover, typically on the side of the camera. Insert a compatible CompactFlash (CF) card or xD-Picture Card, ensuring it is oriented correctly. Close the cover securely. Format the memory card in the camera's menu before initial use to ensure proper operation.
3. Lens Attachment
Align the red or white index mark on the lens with the corresponding mark on the camera's lens mount. Rotate the lens clockwise until it locks into place. To remove the lens, press the lens release button and rotate the lens counter-clockwise.

Operating the Camera
1. Power On/Off
Locate the power switch, usually near the shutter button, and slide it to the 'ON' position to power on the camera. Slide it to 'OFF' to power off.
2. Autofocus System
The E-3 features an advanced 11-point twin cross sensor AF system, designed for world-class speed and precision. This system ensures accurate focus detection for both vertical and horizontal patterns, even in low-light conditions. Select your desired AF mode (e.g., Single AF, Continuous AF) via the camera's menu or dedicated buttons.
3. High-Speed Performance
Benefit from high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 5 frames per second, ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects. The camera also boasts a rapid 1/8000 second shutter speed, allowing for precise control over exposure and freezing action.
4. Image Stabilization
The E-3 incorporates a body-integrated image stabilization mechanism, providing up to 5 EV steps of correction. This allows for sharp handheld shots even in challenging lighting conditions or when using telephoto lenses. This system works with all Four Thirds system lenses.
5. Live View Function
Utilize the free-angle Live View function with the 2.5-inch, 230,000-dot HyperCrystal LCD monitor. This monitor can rotate freely, enabling shooting from high or low angles without awkward positioning. Live View also offers magnified display (5x, 7x, 10x) for precise manual focusing, and real-time exposure/white balance effect checks.

6. Optical Viewfinder
The large, high-precision optical viewfinder offers a 100% field of view and 1.15x magnification, providing a bright and comfortable viewing experience. It uses high-refractive index glass and silver coating to minimize light loss and ensure high resolution.
Maintenance
1. Dust Reduction System
The OLYMPUS E-3 features a Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF) Dust Reduction System. This system vibrates the filter in front of the image sensor at ultrasonic speeds to shake off dust and debris, which is then collected by an adhesive unit. This automatic cleaning occurs upon camera startup and during Live View, ensuring clear images free from dust spots.
2. General Cleaning
Regularly clean the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly dampened cloth and then dry thoroughly. Avoid using solvents or abrasive cleaners. Use a blower brush to remove dust from the lens and sensor (when exposed during lens changes). Never touch the sensor directly.
3. Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the battery and store the camera in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use desiccant packets if storing in humid environments.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your OLYMPUS E-3, please refer to the following general troubleshooting steps:
- Camera does not power on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Check if the memory card is inserted properly.
- Images are blurry: Check your focus settings (AF mode, focus point). Ensure image stabilization is active if shooting handheld in low light. Verify shutter speed is appropriate for the scene to prevent motion blur.
- Dust spots appear on images: Activate the camera's dust reduction system. If spots persist, professional cleaning may be required.
- Memory card error: Reformat the memory card in the camera. If the error persists, try a different memory card.
- Controls are unresponsive: Turn the camera off and then on again. If the issue continues, remove and reinsert the battery.
