Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the accurate operation of your WindTrak 15. Please follow these steps carefully.

Assembly Instructions:

1. Attach the Vane: Carefully slide the WindTrak vane onto the main shaft of the mast mount assembly. Ensure it rotates freely on the sapphire jewel bearing.
2. Install Tacking Tabs: Position the adjustable tacking tabs on the indicator arms. These can be set to desired angles to assist with sailing upwind.
3. Mount the Bird-Proof Spike: Secure the bird-proof spike to the top of the vane assembly. This feature helps deter birds from perching on the indicator, which can cause damage or affect accuracy.

Mounting to Mast:

The WindTrak 15 is designed for easy installation at the masthead. The mast mount bracket can be secured using the provided hardware. Ensure the indicator is mounted vertically and clear of any obstructions that might interfere with wind flow or vane rotation.

• Select a suitable location at the masthead, ensuring clear air flow.
• Use the provided screws to securely fasten the mast mount bracket.

Operation

The WindTrak 15 provides precise wind direction information through its highly sensitive vane. The sapphire jewel bearing ensures minimal friction, allowing the vane to respond to even the lightest breezes.

• Wind Direction: The main vane points directly into the apparent wind.
• Tacking Tabs: The adjustable tacking tabs can be set to indicate optimal upwind sailing angles. Typically, these are set to 45 degrees on either side of the centerline, forming a "V" shape. When sailing, keep the wind indicator outside this "V" for efficient upwind performance.
• Visibility: The design ensures high visibility from the cockpit, allowing for quick and accurate readings.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Periodically clean the vane and body with fresh water to remove salt, dirt, or other debris. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Bearing Check: Ensure the vane rotates freely. If it feels stiff, a gentle rinse with fresh water may resolve the issue. The sapphire jewel bearing is designed for low maintenance.
• Bird Deterrent: The integrated bird-proof spike helps prevent birds from landing on the indicator. Regularly check the spike for any damage and ensure it remains upright.
• Seasonal Inspection: Before and after each sailing season, inspect the entire unit for any signs of wear, cracks, or loose components. Tighten any loose mounting hardware.

Troubleshooting

• Vane Not Rotating Freely:
  • Cause: Dirt, salt, or debris accumulated in the bearing.
