Safety Information
WARNING: Electrical Hazard
- Always turn off power to the heating/cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel before installing or servicing the thermostat.
- Failure to do so may result in electrical shock, property damage, or death.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified technician if you are unsure about any steps.
Setup and Installation
Tools Required:
- Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead)
- Wire stripper/cutter
- Drill (if new mounting holes are needed)
- Level (built-in on thermostat for convenience)
Pre-Installation Checklist:
- Power Off: Disconnect power to your heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker.
- Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove the cover of your old thermostat. Take a picture of the wiring connections for reference.
- Label Wires: Label each wire with the terminal designation from your old thermostat (e.g., R, G, Y, W).
- Remove Old Base: Unscrew and remove the old thermostat base from the wall.
Mounting the New Thermostat:
- Separate Base: Gently pull the front of the new thermostat from its base.
- Position Base: Hold the thermostat base against the wall where you want to install it. Use the built-in level to ensure it is straight.
- Mark Holes: Mark the mounting hole locations on the wall.
- Drill Holes (if needed): Drill pilot holes if mounting to drywall or plaster. Insert wall anchors if necessary.
- Secure Base: Pull the thermostat wires through the opening in the base and secure the base to the wall using the provided screws.

Wiring Connections:
Refer to the wiring diagram specific to your HVAC system type. Connect the labeled wires to the corresponding terminals on the new thermostat base. Ensure all connections are secure.
- R/Rc/Rh: 24V AC power (often red wire).
- C: Common wire (provides continuous 24V power, often blue or black).
- W/W1: Heat call (often white wire).
- Y/Y1: Cool call (often yellow wire).
- G: Fan call (often green wire).
- O/B: Reversing valve for heat pumps.
- Aux/E: Auxiliary/Emergency heat for heat pumps.
Note:
- The 1F83C-11NP is for conventional systems (1 Heat/1 Cool).
- The 1F83H-21PR is for heat pump systems (2 Heat/1 Cool with Aux/E).
- If your old thermostat had a 'C' wire, connect it. If not, the thermostat will operate on battery power, but the backlight may not stay on continuously.
Battery Installation:
Insert two fresh AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment on the back of the thermostat faceplate. Ensure correct polarity.
Attach Thermostat Faceplate:
Align the faceplate with the mounted base and gently push until it snaps securely into place.
Power On and Initial Configuration:
- Restore Power: Turn power back on at the main fuse or circuit breaker.
- System Type Selection (Installer Menu): Access the installer menu to configure the thermostat for your specific HVAC system (conventional or heat pump, gas or electric furnace). Refer to the detailed installer manual for specific menu codes and settings.
- Set Time/Date (1F83H-21PR only): For the programmable model, set the current time and day.
Operating Instructions
Display Overview:

Image: Close-up of the Emerson 1F83C-11NP thermostat display. It clearly shows the current room temperature (70°F) and the set temperature (70°F), along with the system mode (Heat) and battery indicator.
Both models feature a large, backlit LCD display showing:
- Current Room Temperature
- Set Temperature
- System Mode (Heat, Cool, Off, Auto, Aux)
- Fan Mode (On, Auto)
- Battery Indicator
- Time (1F83H-21PR only)
Basic Operation (Both Models):
- Adjusting Temperature: Use the Up and Down arrow buttons on the right side of the thermostat to increase or decrease the set temperature.
- System Switch:
- COOL: Operates the cooling system.
- OFF: Turns off both heating and cooling.
- HEAT: Operates the heating system.
- AUTO (1F83H-21PR only): Automatically switches between heating and cooling modes based on temperature.
- EMER (1F83H-21PR only): Emergency heat mode for heat pump systems.
- Fan Switch:
- AUTO: Fan runs only when the heating or cooling system is operating.
- ON: Fan runs continuously, regardless of heating or cooling calls.
- Backlight: Press any button to activate the backlight for a few seconds. If a 'C' wire is connected, the backlight may be configured to stay on continuously via the installer menu.

Maintenance
Battery Replacement:
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the two AA alkaline batteries immediately. Failure to do so may result in the thermostat losing power and your HVAC system becoming inoperable.
- Gently pull the thermostat faceplate from its base.
- Remove the old batteries and dispose of them properly.
- Insert two new AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Snap the faceplate back onto the base.
Note:
- Replacing batteries typically does not affect programmed settings for the 1F83H-21PR model, but it is good practice to verify time and schedule after replacement.
Cleaning:
Clean the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or chemical sprays, as these can damage the display or internal components.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or blank screen | Dead batteries; No power to thermostat (C-wire issue); Blown fuse/tripped breaker for HVAC system. | Replace batteries. Check C-wire connection. Check HVAC system fuse/breaker. Ensure power is on at the main panel. |
| Heating/Cooling system not responding | System switch in OFF position; Incorrect wiring; HVAC system power off; Thermostat not configured correctly (installer menu). | Set system switch to HEAT or COOL. Verify wiring connections. Check HVAC system power. Review installer menu settings. |
| Temperature inaccurate | Thermostat located near heat source/draft; Calibration issue. | Relocate thermostat if possible. Access installer menu for temperature calibration (if available). |
| Programmable schedule not running (1F83H-21PR) | Hold function active; Incorrect time/day setting; Program not set. | Press Run to cancel Hold. Verify time and day. Ensure a program schedule is entered. |
| Fan runs continuously in AUTO mode | Fan switch set to ON; Wiring issue. | Set fan switch to AUTO. Check G-wire connection. |
If problems persist after attempting these solutions, contact a qualified HVAC technician.
