Setup
Unpacking
Carefully remove the headphones and all accessories from the packaging. Ensure all components are present: the ATH-M50 headphones, the attached coiled cable, and the screw-on 1/4 inch adapter.
Connecting the Headphones
- Identify the audio input port on your device (e.g., audio interface, mixer, amplifier, or portable player). This is typically a 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) stereo jack or a 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) stereo jack.
- The ATH-M50 headphones come with a coiled cable terminating in a gold-plated 3.5 mm mini plug.
- If your device has a 3.5 mm audio jack, directly insert the mini plug into the port.
- If your device requires a 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) connection, screw the included 1/4 inch adapter onto the 3.5 mm mini plug until it is secure. Then, insert the adapter into the 6.3 mm audio jack on your device.
- Ensure the connection is firm to prevent signal loss or intermittent audio.
Operating Instructions
Wearing the Headphones
- Gently extend the headband to fit over your head.
- Position the earcups so they fully enclose your ears. The ATH-M50 features an over-ear design for optimal sound isolation and comfort.
- Adjust the headband length on both sides to achieve a snug yet comfortable fit. The padded headband is designed for extended listening sessions.
- Ensure the left earcup (with the cable) is on your left ear and the right earcup on your right ear for proper stereo imaging.
Volume Control
The ATH-M50 headphones do not feature an integrated volume control on the cable. Adjust the audio volume directly from your connected audio source (e.g., computer, mixer, smartphone, audio player).
Folding and Storage
The ATH-M50 headphones are designed with swiveling earcups and a foldable mechanism for compact storage and portability. To fold:
- Gently rotate the earcups inwards until they lie flat against the headband.
- Fold the earcups upwards towards the headband at the hinge points. This will reduce the overall size of the headphones for easier transport or storage in a bag.
- When unfolding, reverse the process, ensuring the earcups click securely into their listening position.
Maintenance
Cleaning
- Ear Pads: Wipe the ear pads gently with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth with mild soap can be used, but ensure no moisture enters the speaker drivers. Allow to air dry completely before use.
- Headband and Housing: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the headband and earcup housing. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Cable: Keep the cable clean and free from kinks. Wipe with a dry cloth as needed.
Storage
When not in use, store the headphones in a clean, dry place, away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight. Utilize the folding mechanism to store them compactly and protect them from dust and damage.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ATH-M50 headphones, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
No Sound or Intermittent Audio
- Check Connections: Ensure the 3.5 mm mini plug (or 1/4 inch adapter) is fully and securely inserted into your audio source.
- Audio Source Volume: Verify that the volume on your audio source is turned up and not muted.
- Test with Another Device: Connect the headphones to a different audio source (e.g., another smartphone, computer) to determine if the issue is with the headphones or the original device.
- Inspect Cable: Check the cable for any visible damage, kinks, or frayed areas.
Poor Sound Quality (Distortion, Low Volume, Unbalanced Audio)
- Source Quality: Ensure the audio source material is of good quality. Low-quality audio files can result in poor sound reproduction.
- Volume Levels: Avoid excessively high volume levels from your audio source, which can cause distortion.
- Connection Integrity: Re-seat the audio plug firmly into the jack. A loose connection can cause unbalanced audio or static.
- Adapter Check: If using the 1/4 inch adapter, ensure it is screwed on tightly to the 3.5 mm plug.
Discomfort During Use
- Headband Adjustment: Re-adjust the headband to ensure it is not too tight or too loose.
- Earcup Positioning: Ensure the earcups are correctly positioned over your ears, not pressing against them at an awkward angle.
- Breaks: For very long listening sessions, take short breaks to relieve pressure.
