2. Setup and Assembly
The Drive Medical TR39E-SV Transport Wheelchair comes mostly pre-assembled. Follow these steps for final setup:
- Unfolding the Chair: Place the folded chair on a flat, stable surface. Gently pull the armrests outwards to begin unfolding the frame. Continue pulling until the seat is fully extended and locked into place. Ensure all locking mechanisms are engaged.
- Attaching Footrests: The swing-away footrests are typically detached for shipping. Align the footrest attachment points with the corresponding slots on the wheelchair frame. Push down firmly until they click securely into place. Ensure both footrests are properly attached before use.
- Adjusting Footrests: The footrests can be adjusted for height. Locate the adjustment pins on the footrest support tubes. Press the pin and slide the footrest up or down to the desired height, ensuring the pin locks into one of the pre-drilled holes.

3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Transporting a User
- Engage Brakes: Before a user transfers into or out of the chair, ensure the rear wheel brakes are fully engaged. Push down on the brake levers located near the rear wheels until they lock.
- Transferring In/Out: For easier transfer, swing the footrests out of the way or remove them completely. Assist the user in sitting down or standing up from the chair, ensuring they are stable.
- Secure User: Fasten the adjustable seatbelt around the user for added safety during transport.
- Disengage Brakes: To move the chair, lift the brake levers to disengage the brakes.
- Pushing the Chair: Use the ergonomic handgrips on the back of the chair to push and steer. The 8-inch composite wheels provide smooth maneuverability.
3.2 Curb Assist Functionality
To navigate over small obstacles like curbs or thresholds, utilize the curb assist levers located near the rear wheels. Place your foot on the lever and gently press down while simultaneously pushing the handgrips. This action will slightly tilt the chair backward, allowing the front wheels to clear the obstacle. Once the front wheels are over, gently lower the chair and proceed.

4. Folding and Storage
The Drive Medical TR39E-SV is designed for compact storage. To fold the chair:
- Remove Footrests: Detach both swing-away footrests by lifting the release levers and swinging them outwards, then lifting them off the frame.
- Fold Backrest: Locate the release levers on the back of the chair (typically near the top of the backrest tubes). Press these levers and fold the backrest down.
- Collapse Frame: Grasp the seat rails (the bars under the seat) and pull upwards. The chair frame will begin to collapse inwards, becoming more compact. Continue pulling until the chair is fully folded.
Once folded, the chair is significantly narrower, making it easy to store in a car trunk, closet, or other small spaces.

5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Drive Medical Transport Wheelchair.
- Cleaning: The nylon seat upholstery is designed to be easy to clean. Wipe down the frame and upholstery with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Wheel Inspection: Periodically check the 8-inch composite wheels for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure they rotate freely and are free of debris.
- Brake Check: Regularly test the push-to-lock brakes to ensure they engage securely and hold the chair in place.
- Fastener Check: Inspect all nuts, bolts, and fasteners to ensure they are tight. Do not overtighten.
- Storage: Store the chair in a dry, clean environment when not in use.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter any issues with your transport wheelchair, please refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:
- Chair does not fold/unfold smoothly: Check for any obstructions in the folding mechanism. Ensure all levers are properly disengaged or engaged as per the instructions.
- Brakes not holding: Inspect the brake mechanism for wear or damage. Ensure the brake levers are fully pushed down to engage. If issues persist, contact customer support.
- Wheels not rolling freely: Check for debris (hair, lint, etc.) caught in the wheel axles. Clean as necessary. Ensure wheels are not bent or damaged.
- Footrests are loose: Verify that the footrests are correctly inserted and the release levers are fully engaged, locking them into place.
