Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your simplehuman 38 Liter / 10 Gallon Rectangular Kitchen Step Trash Can. Please read these instructions carefully before use and retain for future reference.
Setup
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove all packaging materials from the trash can. Inspect the product for any damage. If damage is found, do not use the product and contact customer support.
2. Placement
Due to its internal hinge and space-efficient rectangular shape, this trash can can be placed directly against a wall or cabinet without the lid hitting the surface when opened. Ensure there is enough clearance for the lid to open fully if desired.

3. Dimensions Overview
Familiarize yourself with the product dimensions to ensure it fits your intended space.

4. Liner Installation
This trash can is designed for use with simplehuman Code J custom fit liners. These liners are engineered to fit perfectly, preventing slipping and bunching.
- Lift the inner bucket out of the trash can.
- Place a simplehuman Code J liner into the inner bucket, ensuring the top edge of the liner is folded over the rim of the bucket.
- Lower the inner bucket back into the trash can.

Operation
1. Using the Step Pedal
The trash can features a strong steel pedal for hands-free operation. Simply step on the pedal to open the lid. Release the pedal to allow the lid to close.

2. Silent Close Lid
The patented lid shox technology ensures a slow, silent close every time. This mechanism prevents abrupt slamming and reduces noise.

3. Stay-Open Lid Feature
For longer tasks or when frequently disposing of items, the lid can be set to stay open. Manually lift the lid to its full open position until it locks into place. To close, gently push the lid down to disengage the lock.
4. Inner Bucket and Liner Change
The removable inner bucket facilitates easy cleaning and liner changes. To change the liner:
- Open the lid.
- Lift the inner bucket a few inches.
- Tilt the inner bucket towards you and rest it in the "bucket park" position, which holds it securely while you remove the full liner.
- Remove the full liner and replace it with a new simplehuman Code J liner.
- Lower the inner bucket back into the trash can.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Exterior
The brushed stainless steel exterior is fingerprint-proof. To clean, wipe with a soft, damp cloth and a mild stainless steel cleaner if necessary. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, which can damage the finish.
2. Cleaning the Inner Bucket
The durable inner bucket can be removed for thorough cleaning. Wash with warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely before placing it back into the trash can.
3. Odor Control
For enhanced odor control, consider using simplehuman odorsorb pods (sold separately). These pods fit discreetly under the lid and continuously release a natural plant oil-based formula to neutralize trash odors for approximately 45 days.
Troubleshooting
- Lid not closing silently: Ensure no obstructions are preventing the lid from closing fully. Check the lid shox mechanism for any visible damage or debris.
- Lid not opening or closing properly with pedal: Inspect the steel pedal and its connection to the lid mechanism for any obstructions or damage. Ensure the pedal is fully depressed.
- Liner slipping: Ensure you are using simplehuman Code J custom fit liners. Verify the liner is properly folded over the inner bucket's rim.
- Trash can unstable: Check the non-skid base for any damage or missing rubber pads. Ensure the trash can is placed on a flat, even surface.
If you encounter issues not listed here or if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, please contact simplehuman customer support.
