1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper use, care, and maintenance of your Armstrong 303B Flute. Please read these instructions carefully to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your instrument. The Armstrong 303B Flute features a silver head, silver-plated body and foot, hand-mounted silver-plated keys with French pointed cup arms, a hand-cut embouchure hole, and a B Foot with 10k gold springs.
2. Product Overview
The Armstrong 303B Flute consists of three main parts:
- Headjoint: The top section where the embouchure hole is located.
- Body: The longest middle section containing most of the keys.
- Footjoint: The shortest section, typically with C or B keys. The 303B model includes a B Foot.

3. Setup and Assembly
Follow these steps to properly assemble your flute:
- Handle with Care: Always hold the flute by its barrel sections, avoiding pressure on the keys.
- Attach Footjoint: Gently twist the footjoint onto the body, aligning the rod on the footjoint with the center of the lowest key on the body. Do not force it.
- Attach Headjoint: Gently twist the headjoint onto the body. Align the embouchure hole with the first key on the body.
- Check Alignment: Ensure all sections are securely connected and keys operate freely.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Holding the Flute
Hold the flute horizontally, parallel to the floor. Your left hand supports the flute closer to the headjoint, and your right hand supports it closer to the footjoint. Ensure your fingers are curved and relaxed over the keys.
4.2 Producing Sound (Embouchure)
Place the lip plate against your chin, just below your lower lip. Direct a focused stream of air across the embouchure hole, similar to blowing across the top of a bottle. Experiment with lip tension and air direction to produce a clear tone.
4.3 Fingerings
Refer to a standard flute fingering chart for specific notes. Pressing keys closes tone holes, altering the pitch. Ensure keys are pressed firmly to create an airtight seal.
5. Maintenance and Care
5.1 Daily Cleaning
- Swabbing: After each use, swab the inside of the flute with a cleaning rod and a soft, lint-free cloth (e.g., silk swab) to remove moisture.
- Exterior: Gently wipe the exterior of the flute with a soft polishing cloth to remove fingerprints and oils. Avoid touching the pads.
5.2 Storage
Always disassemble the flute and store it in its original protective case when not in use. This prevents damage and keeps dust away from the keys and pads. Store the case in a stable environment, away from extreme temperatures or humidity.
5.3 Periodic Maintenance
- Pads: If pads become sticky, gently clean them with a piece of cigarette paper or a specialized pad cleaning paper.
- Lubrication: Joint corks may occasionally need a very small amount of cork grease to ensure smooth assembly.
- Professional Servicing: It is recommended to have your flute professionally serviced by a qualified technician annually to ensure proper adjustment and prevent major issues.
6. Troubleshooting
