Schecter Hellraiser C-1 Electric Guitar Instruction Manual

Model: Hellraiser C-1

Introduction and Overview

The Schecter Hellraiser C-1 is a high-performance electric guitar designed for versatility and powerful tone. Since its introduction, the Hellraiser series has been recognized for its quality construction and playability. This model features active EMG 81TW/89 pickups, offering a wide range of tonal options including dual-mode "split" tones. The guitar is built with a mahogany body, a quilt maple top on select models, a mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard with Gothic Cross inlays and abalone binding. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your Schecter Hellraiser C-1 to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Setup

1. Initial Inspection

Upon unboxing, carefully inspect the guitar for any signs of damage. Ensure all components are securely in place. It is recommended to allow the guitar to acclimate to your room's temperature and humidity for a few hours before making any adjustments.

2. Installing the 9V Battery for Active Pickups

The EMG active pickups require a 9V battery for power. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the guitar. Open the compartment, insert a fresh 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity, and close the cover. To maximize battery life, always unplug the instrument cable from the guitar when not in use, as this disengages the battery circuit.

3. Tuning and Stringing

Your Hellraiser C-1 is equipped with Schecter locking tuners, which provide excellent tuning stability. To string the guitar, insert the string through the bridge, pull it taut through the tuning post, and then tighten the locking mechanism on the tuner before winding. This minimizes string slippage. Use a digital tuner to accurately tune each string to your desired pitch. The standard string gauge is 10-46.

4. Action and Intonation

The guitar is factory-set for optimal playability. However, personal preferences for string action (height above the fretboard) and intonation may vary. If adjustments are needed, it is recommended to consult a qualified guitar technician to ensure proper setup, especially for the bridge system (Tone-O-Matic or Floyd Rose Original, depending on your model).

Operating: Features and Controls

1. EMG Active Pickups (81TW/89)

The Hellraiser C-1 is equipped with EMG 81TW (bridge) and EMG 89 (neck) active humbucking pickups. These pickups feature powerful ceramic magnets, providing high output and increased sustain, ideal for rock and metal genres. The "TW" in 81TW indicates a dual-mode pickup that can be split into a single-coil mode.

2. Controls

  • Volume Knobs: Two volume knobs, one for each pickup (neck and bridge).
  • Tone Knob: One master tone knob. This knob also features a push/pull function for coil-tapping.
  • 3-Way Pickup Selector Switch:
    • Up Position: Neck pickup only.
    • Middle Position: Both neck and bridge pickups.
    • Down Position: Bridge pickup only.
  • Coil-Tapping (Push/Pull Tone Knob): Pulling up the tone knob splits the humbucking pickups into single-coil mode, offering a brighter, lower-output tone. Pushing it down returns them to humbucking mode for a thicker, higher-output sound. This feature significantly expands the guitar's tonal versatility.

3. Neck Joint and Fretboard

The Hellraiser C-1 features an ultra-access set-neck joint, which provides enhanced comfort and effortless access to the higher frets. The mahogany neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard, adorned with distinctive Gothic Cross inlays and abalone binding, contributing to both playability and aesthetic appeal.

4. Bridge System

Depending on the specific model variant, your Hellraiser C-1 may feature either a Tone-O-Matic bridge system or a Floyd Rose Original tremolo system. Both are designed for excellent tuning stability and sustain. The Tone-O-Matic offers a fixed bridge setup, while the Floyd Rose allows for expressive pitch bending and dive bombs.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Regularly wipe down your guitar with a soft, lint-free cloth after each use to remove sweat and fingerprints. For a deeper clean, use guitar-specific cleaning and polishing products. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.

2. String Replacement

Strings should be replaced regularly, depending on playing frequency and personal preference. Old strings can lose their tone and intonation. When replacing strings, do so one at a time to maintain neck tension. Refer to the "Setup" section for details on using locking tuners.

3. Battery Replacement

The 9V battery for the active pickups will eventually need replacement. A dying battery can result in weak or distorted sound. Replace the battery as described in the "Setup" section. Always keep a spare 9V battery on hand.

4. Professional Setup

For optimal playability and to address any complex adjustments (e.g., truss rod, bridge height, intonation), it is highly recommended to have your guitar professionally set up by a qualified technician at least once a year, or whenever you notice significant changes in playability or tone.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound or Weak Output:
    • Check the instrument cable connection at both the guitar and amplifier.
    • Ensure the 9V battery for the active pickups is fresh and correctly installed.
    • Verify volume and tone knobs are not set to zero.
    • Check the pickup selector switch position.
  • Excessive Fret Buzz:
    • This can be caused by low string action, an uneven fretboard, or improper neck relief. Minor adjustments can sometimes be made to the bridge saddle height. For persistent or severe fret buzz, a professional setup is recommended.
  • Poor Tuning Stability:
    • Ensure strings are properly installed and stretched.
    • Check that the locking tuners (if applicable) are securely tightened.
    • For Floyd Rose systems, ensure the locking nut is properly clamped and the fine tuners are not at their extreme limits.
    • Worn strings can also affect tuning stability; consider replacing them.
  • Distorted or Unclear Sound (when clean tone is desired):
    • Check amplifier settings.
    • Ensure the coil-tap function (push/pull tone knob) is disengaged if you desire a full humbucker sound, or engaged if you want a single-coil sound.
    • A dying 9V battery can also cause distortion.
